October Half Term Activities

It's that time of year again and as always we have plenty of craft activities to keep those little ones busy!

Specific details for age ranges and ticketing is in italics. Be sure to check out our activities calendar as well for everything else going on in our libraries.

Spooktacular crafts / Bitterne Library / Thursday 25 October / 1.30pm to 3pm

Please note Bitterne’s activities are suitable for children aged 4 to 10 and all events are ticketed with tickets available in branch for a £1 deposit. 

Room on the broom / Central Library / Wednesday 24 October / 10.30am to 12.30pm

Central’s activities are suitable for children of all ages and all events are drop-in.

Witchy Faces / Lordshill Library / Tuesday 23 October / 1.30pm to 3pm

Lordshill’s activities are suitable for children aged 3 and older and all events are drop-in.

Portswood’s activities are suitable for children of all ages and all events are drop-in.

Woolston’s activities are suitable for children of all ages and all events are drop-in.


Digital Champions - can they help you?

Get Online Week 2018 has just been and gone and this year's theme was "try one thing", fortunately our digital champions are perfectly placed to help you achieve just that.

These fantastic volunteers are patient, experienced computer users who offer their free time to help improve individuals skills on a one-to-one drop-in basis, so there's no need to book.

Evening Talk at Bitterne Library

Bitterne_Library

Bitterne Library will host an informative talk on Thursday 25 October at 7pm.

"The Flanders Poppy - Symbol of Remembrance" with Geoff Watts, a Southampton Green Badge tourist guide and member of Friends of Southampton Old Cemetery.

Friends of Bitterne Library will be providing refreshments, please feel free to join us.


SO: To Speak 2018

SO: To Speak 2018 is a weekend of live literature activity, taking place from 2-4th November 2018. Through a varied programme of workshops, Small Press Showcases and evening events SO: To Speak 2018 will introduce audiences to new writers and writing. 

SO:ToSpeak2018

The weekend is also a celebration of creative output of the city through the SO: Write project with showcase events and book launches from the project. SO: Write is a two-year literature development initiative that saw workshops, special events and residencies for writers in Southampton Libraries, Mayflower Theatre and John Hansard Gallery.

Autism Friendly Chill-Out Sessions

Saturday 3 November / Woolston Library / 11am-1pm

Woolston Library host a series of autism friendly sessions. For the sessions our meeting room will be set up with low lighting, blinds drawn with large and portable sensory equipment available.

Additionally comfy bean bags and a range of books will be utilised to create a comfortable calm space for families to use, either to stay in or dip in and out of as they use the full range of library resources and services elsewhere in the building.

We welcome chewys, ear defenders, pushchairs and any other aids you want to bring, a social story and shoe park will be available for the events.


Improvements at Portswood Library

PortswoodLibrary

Portswood Library will close temporarily from Monday 29 October to Saturday 17 November inclusive for internal improvements. 

The library will re-open on Monday 19 November with a new access lift, windows and carpets and the children's and family library will be expanded and relocated.

While the library is closed, the nearest alternative libraries are Central LibraryBurgess Road Library and Cobbett Hub & Library.

Any books issued since Monday 1 October will automatically be due back after the closed period.

Thank you for your patience while we carry out these improvements.

We would also like to thank the Friends of Portswood Library for their fundraising efforts and contribution to the new children's library furniture.
