Phase one of the Bassett Avenue works, taking place between Winchester Road and Chilworth Roundabout, has been completed a few days ahead of schedule, despite the snow and ice last week. As a result Bassett Avenue was reopened both ways from 6am this morning (Friday 9 March).
Phase two of the work to resurface Bassett Avenue overnight will go ahead as planned from 8pm Monday 12 March. The resurfacing will require the full closure of Bassett Avenue in both directions between 8pm and 6am Monday to Friday for up to three weeks. Full information is available via the link below.

 Successful blue badge fraud prosecution
We successfully prosecuted a case of blue badge fraud yesterday. The defendant misused their grandmother’s blue badge on three occasions last year to park their car in the disabled bay outside their home in Bevois ward. The badge holder had been living outside of the UK at this time, having left the country some two years before. The Magistrate’s gave a conditional discharge for 24 months, and ordered payment of £504, which was the full cost for bringing the case to court, and a £20 victim surcharge.
We are committed to protecting the majority of blue badge users who rely on their badge to access vital services and to go about their daily lives. If you are in possession of a blue badge that you or a family member no longer needs, please return it, cut in half to Gateway, or post to: The Blue Badge Team, Southampton City Council, Civic Centre, Southampton, SO14 7LF. More information on our blue badge scheme and making an application is available from our website via the below link.

Southampton City Council is marking LGBT Adoption & Fostering Awareness Week (5 - 11 March 2018) by reiterating its support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender foster carers and adoptive parents and renewing its call for prospective parents to come forward.
There’s an urgent need for more adopters and foster carers in the UK, with more than 7,000 new foster families needed and some 72,600 children in care in England alone in 2017. The greatest need is for foster carers for older children, sibling groups, disabled children and unaccompanied asylum seeking children. Southampton is no different.
If you could give a child a brighter future get in touch with us and find out more about the support we offer via the link below. You can also attend our Fostering & Adoption Recruitment Open Day taking place tomorrow (Saturday 10 March) at the Holiday Inn, Eastleigh from 10am to 2pm.

City councillors, staff and other clean air volunteers hit the streets of Southampton this week in the areas around the Civic Centre, talking to people about the benefits of switching off their car engines when they are stationary.
As part of the recently launched Clean Air Network’s ‘No-Idling’ campaign, this event links with billboard messages around the city until the beginning of April. The aim is to inform drivers of the fact that by regularly turning off their engines they can save fuel and money, and improve the quality of air in the immediate area for themselves, pedestrians, cyclists and other car users.

A mystery shopper survey conducted by the National Childbirth Trust reveals that Southampton venues are overwhelmingly welcoming to breastfeeding families.
Seventeen venues from across the city, including bars, cafes, a community centre, a shopping centre and an independent cinema, were surveyed over Summer 2017 and rated on whether a breastfeeding mum felt confident to breastfeed there and whether staff were supportive of that decision.
The Breastfeeding Welcome Scheme runs in the city as part of Southampton City Council’s commitment to support women who want to be able to breastfeed.
The number of Southampton mums who choose to breastfeed continues to improve, according to latest data from NHS Southampton Clinical Commissioning Group and the council, half of new mothers citywide are now choosing to breastfeed their child at 6-8 weeks. This compares to 44% of mums for England during the same period.

Keeping Southampton Tidy!
The Southampton Junior Neighbourhood
Wardens will be joining forces with the Bitterne Litter Team on Saturday 10th
March 2018, as part of the national Keep Britain Tidy event ‘The Great British
Spring Clean’. A group of Junior Neighbourhood
Wardens aged between 7 and 12 will don gloves and hand-held litter pickers to
target a litter hotspot in the city, the Red Lion underpass in Bitterne, and
other adjacent areas.
The council‘s Junior Neighbourhood
Warden scheme is designed to encourage children to engage in community
activities, projects and events across Southampton. They are supported to
develop a sense of pride and respect in their local neighbourhood and promote a
positive image of children in the community. The Juniors work alongside the
council's Neighbourhood Wardens and other council services to help improve
their local area.
The ‘Great British Spring Clean’ is
a national campaign running from the 2nd-25th March with a simple aim: to bring
people across the country together to clear up the litter that blights towns,
villages, countryside, and beaches. The aim is to inspire people to get
outdoors, get active, and help clear up the rubbish that lies around us.
