Vocalists from various secondary schools, colleges and community choirs
have joined together to take part in Southampton Music Hub’s Vivaldi Big Sing
Project. The project sees students and music teachers from across Southampton work
towards a mass performance at Central Hall on Monday 18 January.
The project was devised in conjunction with Richard Taunton Sixth Form
College for secondary school pupils to access high quality free
singing workshops from Southampton Music Hub and participate in a very large
scale event with massed choirs and orchestra.
The performance will include students from Bitterne Park Secondary
School, St Anne’s Catholic School, St George Catholic College, Upper Shirley
High and Richard Tauntons Sixth Form College.
Alongside the students several community choirs will also be taking part
such as Richard Taunton Sixth Form College Community Choir, Soton Voce and
Southampton Gospel Choir.

Launched in November 2015, Art Asia and Southampton Music Hub have joined together to create the Indian Classical Music Club.
Evenings include presentations on the genre with performances from renowned musicians. The next event features renowned international musicians Dharambir Singh (Sitar) and Sanju Sahai (Tabla).
Dharambir Singh is one of the most prominent Sitar players based in England. Disciple of the legendary Sitar maestro Ustad Vilayat Khan, Dharambir has truly imbibed the sound of the rich Imdad Khani and Vilayat Khani Gharana (style).
Sanju Sahai, is currently one of the most sought after Tabla players of his generation. Belonging to the Benares Gharana (lineage) and being the 6th generation of Tabla players in the lineage, he began playing at an early age. Being a child prodigy, he gained his Bachelor of Music aged 13 and Master of Music at 18.

Join CSO for an intergalactic adventure for all the
family. Conductor John Traill will lead the orchestra through a selection of exciting
pieces, including Star Wars and the Thunderbirds March.
Presenters from Winchester
Science Centre and Planetarium will also be there for this fun-packed family
concert. A great way to introduce
your children to the magic of live music.

There was a fantastic turn out at the first Choral Clans of
2016 with 38 attendees welcoming in the New Year with a good old
sing! Inspirational workshop leader
Fiona Funnell was delighted to be able to work with such a large and diverse
group of singers from the very young (18 months) to highly experienced choir
goers. Central
Library was a great location for the workshop, welcoming families from across the city. In
the workshop participants learned some beautiful part songs from world and folk
music traditions, Groove Armada and singing in a made up language.

Music teacher and members of Southampton Music Hub are invited to the AGM at Turner Sims. This
is a very exciting time for SMH, as we embark on the second stage of our
journey. We want to make sure that you are a part of that.
The title of the meeting is 'Looking Ahead: Our Journey'. There will be a
statistical review of the past year, New Hub Partnership projects that
have been implemented. Most importantly, the meeting will focus on how your
organisation can shape the future direction of the hub and what that journey
may look like.

Next week
Mayflower Theatre is once again joining forces with Welsh National Opera to
give young people the opportunity to participate, develop and learn skills
across various art forms including drama, singing, opera, music, composing,
movement, storytelling, directing and performing. To celebrate Welsh National
Opera’s 70th Birthday and commemorate the 100th
anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, a new opera has been commissioned
called In Parenthesis; an adaptation of the epic poem by David Jones from
composer Iain Bell.
The Southampton project will focus on myth in war and also
personal connections to war stories and camaraderie. The project will run from
January to June over varying dates culminating with a visit to National Museum
of Wales and Welsh Millennium Centre to see In Parenthesis. There are still spaces for young people aged 13-18 who want to take part.

Congratulations to young Southampton tuba player Joe Tucker for being awarded a place on the National Youth Orchestra (NYO) Inspire programme. NYO Inspire is a programme of orchestral music-making centred on the power of peer inspiration and sharing. In 2016, NYO will host 700 young musicians aged 13 to 19 years old in a series of free workshops, residencies and ensembles nationwide.
