Marches Careers Hub would like to hear from local employers, employees or entrepreneurs who could volunteer a little time to support a local SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disability) school or college.
We would like to reach out to those exceptional individuals or businesses who have empathy and are keen to support young people facing barriers as they navigate their way through education towards adulthood.
Our team of Careers Enterprise Coordinators support schools and colleges to improve their careers provision and a significant strand of that work is connecting them to local businesses.
Working with our brilliant colleagues who educate students with special educational needs and disabilities, we know that our SEND schools and colleges sometimes find these business connections particularly difficult to make.
This is a fantastic opportunity for local employers to access the untapped potential within these young people, which will support to reduce skills shortages and recruitment issues, whilst diversifying the workforce and evidencing a real commitment to Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion.
The types of support that we regularly facilitate are very varied. Examples of ways that businesses might engage with schools include:
- putting on sector insight days
- hosting a workplace visit
- delivering an inspirational talk
- mentoring a small group developing their employability skills
- attending a careers fair, a careers speed-networking event or a mock-interview day.

Launching 2 new services and streamlining its business operation was made possible for one Shropshire Business through the support it received from the Shropshire Growth Hub.
Signing up for the Growth Hub’s Business Boost 360 programme meant that Rachael of Rachael Brown Equine Chiropractor received funding to work with local consultant Zebra PR. She also accessed additional funding from the Small Capital Grant Scheme for Businesses to buy a new piece of laser equipment.
Zebra PR provided support in social media and email marketing to effectively communicate Rachael’s new ‘zone days’ to her clients, an operational change that allowed her to concentrate appointments in a specific area and cut down on travelling time.
Zebra PR also helped Rachael to plan and launch a new canine chiropractic clinic and, as a result of buying a new piece of equipment, a new service offering laser treatment that can aid the rehabilitation of both dogs and horses after injury.
The support Rachael has received has meant an increase in her profit margin and overall income. Because she now operates in a more time-efficient way, she also has the space to market and build her business.

We know how difficult it is to address emissions from business supply chains, so we’re delighted to be working with our members The Clean Tech Business Group Ltd to support Shropshire businesses with this challenge.
The programme will provide in-depth and long term support to 25 businesses in the Shropshire Council area, to help them measure carbon emissions, develop a net zero strategy and, crucially, to deliver carbon reductions.
The support is free as the project is funded by the Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

Shropshire Council is seeking feedback on its Draft Air Quality Action Plans (AQAPs) for Shrewsbury and Bridgnorth, which outline the actions the council will take to meet the air quality objectives and reduce the health impacts of air pollution in the two towns.
The Air Quality Action Plans (AQAPs) were developed following the establishment of Air Quality Management Areas (AQMAs) near Shrewsbury’s Railway Station and along Pound Street in Bridgnorth, due to nitrogen dioxide (NO2) levels surpassing national standards.
The draft AQAPs include a summary of:
- the current air quality situation
- sources of pollution
- an assessment of the reductions required
- details of the key priorities and actions
The actions cover a range of areas such as traffic management, sustainable transport, public awareness, and planning policies. The draft AQAPs also provide an estimate of the cost and benefit of each proposed measure, as well as the expected timescale for achieving compliance with the air quality objectives.
