Shropshire Charity Manager Awarded MBE for Vital Work in Tackling Child Exploitation
Sonya Jones, Service Manager and Safeguarding Lead at drug, alcohol and mental health charity, With You Shropshire, has been awarded an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire Medal) for services in tackling child criminal exploitation.
Sonya has worked in the drug and alcohol support sector for over 20 years and at With You Shropshire for almost eight years. During that time Sonya has led the charity’s work in providing non-judgemental support to young people exploited by drug dealing gangs.
Sonya and her team have been on the frontline of supporting victims of county lines – the term used for when gangs from cities expand illegal drug networks to other areas of the country using dedicated mobile lines. These gangs often prey on vulnerable young people to transport drugs throughout the UK.
The award of an MBE, announced in the King’s honours list on Sunday 18 June 2023, recognises Sonya’s ongoing commitment to ensure that all young people who are groomed, coerced and controlled into crime are recognised as victims of trafficking and exploitation.
Sonya also advocates the adoption of a new public health approach to drug prevention that works with schools, pupil referral units and providers for those outside of mainstream education. This advocacy work has been recognised by the UK Parliament and the House of Lords.
Sonya Jones, Service Manager and Safeguarding Lead at With You, said:-
“I’m honoured and shocked to receive an MBE for doing the job I love. I accept this award on behalf of my team past and present who have worked tirelessly for the victims of child exploitation, as well as the thousands of children and families who are tragically impacted.
“I have an obligation to continue the work I’m being recognised for and I’m inspired to continue my journey to raise awareness of child exploitation nationally. I’d like to see the role of young people substance misuse services being recognised as part of vital support and call upon the need for a standalone child criminal exploitation national strategy. I’m passionate, as are With You colleagues, about adopting a public health approach.
“With You are at the forefront of this work and have supported me by giving me the platform to be able to raise these issues. I will continue to call for a wider recognition that all young people who are groomed, coerced and controlled by exploiters are recognised as victims of trafficking and exploitation, not criminals.”
Belinda Phipps, Chief Executive at With You, said:-
“Sonya is an inspirational leader within With You, driving our vital work with victims of child exploitation for almost eight years. During this time Sonya has supported hundreds of victims throughout the UK, giving them and their families the chance to get their lives back on track. She has also been a tireless advocate for change, positively influencing the UK conversation around child exploitation.
Sonya is determined, modest and inspires other people in the organisation. Speaking on behalf of With You staff, I would like to pass on our congratulations for this honour, and thank Sonya for her continued passion and dedication to the children and their families.”

Latest PBE Barometer Report Shows "Glimmers of Optimism"
The latest barometer survey report on the voluntary sector from Pro Bono Economics in partnership with Nottingham Trent University indicates that small improvements in the overall economy are leading to charities feeling slightly more optimistic about the immediate future than in 2022.
Results show that,
"While a large majority of charities still expect demand over the coming months to increase, a growing proportion expect that they will be able to meet it. For the first time since the survey started in November 2022, more than half of charities of all sizes (51% of large charities, 52% of medium charities and 61% of small charities) expect to be able to meet demand for their support over the next three months.
In part, this is because fewer charities expect large increases in demand for their support. It may also be helped by the improved financial circumstances that many survey respondents report and an easing of the recruitment challenges that charities faced last year. Charities of all sizes, large charities in particular, are feeling more optimistic about their finances than they were in November last year – the proportion expecting their finances to improve over the next quarter has almost doubled (from 17% to 32%).
While charities have reason to be more optimistic, the report stresses that issues such as uncertainties around funding and staff and volunteer recruitment and retention have not disappeared and are still concerns for the majority of charities in the study. For example, they report that 63% of small charities cite volunteer recruitment as a major organisational concern.

New Research on Small Grants Published by DSC
The Directory of Social Change (DSC) in partnership with the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust has recently published a new report on the experiences and impacts of charities receiving small grants.
Most grants made in the UK are "small grants" which the DSC defines as £20,000 or less. However, the DSC says that research on small grants is fairly sparse, including research on their impacts, because so often evaluations, while collected, are not made publicly available.
Recommendations emerging from this research include suggesting that grant makers make the application and evaluation processes more simple, and publish evaluation results publicly. Additionally, the money should be made available more quickly and timelines set out clearly in advance so that organisations can plan.

Volunteer at Fordhall Organic Farm
Fordhall Organic Farm, near Market Drayton, has a long-standing volunteer programme, where involvement can include conservation and maintenance, to supporting the office team, to ensuring the smooth running of their exciting seasonal events! In the past, volunteers have donated their time to construct a boardwalk, a roundhouse, and even the Straw Lodge, which now provides accommodation for volunteers who live further afield.
Participants are always eager to share their own stories of getting stuck-in on the farm, with volunteering regular Nim saying:
"It is my happy place, it is the place that changed me for the better, who knew that getting covered from head to toe in mud/clay was so good for the soul? But it is!"
Fordhall Community Land Initiative Manager, Charlotte Hollins, said:
"We are very proud of our voluntary programme, and do hope it continues long into the future – with familiar faces and hopefully some new ones too. We are always excited to welcome members old and new!
Every volunteer makes a valuable contribution to keeping life here on the farm running. We simply wouldn’t be able to achieve half the projects we have going on without their help – we are endlessly grateful for their time and participation."
Their next Volunteer Weekend is on the 16th and 17th September, with some spaces available on their regular Farm Fridays as well.
To find out more about participating in Fordhall’s volunteering programme, please email project@fordhallfarm.com, call 01630 638 696, or visit their website.

Place of Worship Protective Security Fund Opens for 2023/24 Applications
Set up in 2016, The Home Office funding aims to reduce the risk and impact of hate crime at places of worship such as churches, gurdwaras, mosques, temples, and associated faith community centres across England and Wales.
In 2023/24, there are grant two schemes, covered by the same application form:
- Places of Worship Protective Security Funding Scheme
- Protective Security for Mosques Scheme
Grants can cover the costs of protective measures from the following list:
- CCTV (fixed cameras, not pan-tilt cameras)
- Fencing and/or railings (no more than 2.1m high)
- Manually operated pedestrian and vehicle gates
- Door hardening, locks and mail-box/mail bag
- Reinforcing single glazed windows (with anti-shatter film or bars/grilles only)
- Intruder alarms including integrated smoke/heat detection
- Door entry access control (fob or keypad)
- Video intercom systems
- Lighting (building mounted)
Applicants do not need to choose what they would like to apply for in advance. If successful, a survey will be carried out at the place of worship. During this survey, the most appropriate measures for the site will be discussed.
It should also be noted that the funding only covers the provision and installation of these security measures. It does not cover other associated costs such as licensing and planning permission, or ongoing costs such as charges for annual service, maintenance and monitoring.
Mosques and associated faith community centres can also apply for some security guarding services, where they feel security guards will improve the safety of their site and those worshipping there.
The deadline to apply is 15 August 2023. Find out more and apply via the GOV.UK website.

- Prevent food from being wasted at the manufacturing and processing stage.
- Minimise food waste from retailers.
- Find creative ways to use surplus food in communities or at home.
The fund can support ideas that are ready to test, or concepts that have been tested and are ready to progress further.

The deadline for Expressions of Interest is 21 July 2023 (5pm). For more information and to submit an expression of interest, visit the Eat It Up Fund website.
Which? Fund Opens for Applications
Which?, the UK’s consumer champion, is inviting UK registered charities, universities with exempt charitable status and not-for-profit Community Interest Companies registered in the UK to apply for a share of the £75,000 being made available for 2023/24.
In this call for applications, the Which? Fund is offering restricted grants to support work aiming to:
- Improve understanding of consumer harms affecting diverse and disadvantaged communities, including novel harms in digital markets.
- Identify evidence-led, pragmatic solutions to consumer harm.
- Develop partnerships and encourage collaborative working to provide a more powerful voice for all UK consumers.

- Projects exploring consumer harms experienced by diverse and disadvantaged communities in digital markets, where information asymmetries, malign online choice architecture, automated decision-making, AI interfaces and dynamic pricing can place consumers at a distinct disadvantage, and some groups may face greater detriment than others.
There is no set minimum or maximum grant. It is anticipated that a small number of high-quality projects will be funded. Applicants should cost their project based on what they need. It is expected that projects will take up to 12 months to complete.
Closing 18 September 2023 (5pm). For more information and to apply, visit the Which? Fund website.
Tender Opportunity: Scheme Based Housing Support
Housing Support services will support people whose needs are such that their ability to maintain a tenancy or remain independent in their home would be compromised without that support. The focus of housing-related support will be on ensuring that people have access to appropriate and settled accommodation according to their circumstances and have the support networks in place to help them sustain that accommodation.
This contract will have two principal areas of focus:
- Helping Service Users to access complementary services aimed at preventing, delaying or reducing the need for long-term formal care and support, including healthcare services.
- Helping to prevent tenancy failure leading to homelessness
The Council wishes to procure a single, or small number of, contracts which deliver on all aspects of the Service Specification. In doing so, the Council recognises the importance of a diverse and sustainable VCSE sector in delivering the contract outcomes and in providing choice to people who use services. The Council will therefore expect any proposals to incorporate strong formal or informal structures (such as consortium, partnership or other alliance) which will maximise the effectiveness of the Service and which retains diversity of provision.
Tenders will be accepted which propose either:
1.A single provider delivering scheme-based housing support across the whole Shropshire Council area; OR
2.A lead contractor on behalf of identified sub-contractors delivering scheme-based housing support across the whole Shropshire Council area; OR
3.A partnership or consortium proposing a contracting structure which will deliver scheme-based housing support across the whole Shropshire Council area. For clarity, scheme-based support is currently delivered through 5 geographically based contracts covering the whole Shropshire Council area and the Council would not welcome an increase in the number of individual contracts.
The total budget available is capped at £255,000 per annum and will be fixed for the duration of the contract(s). The duration of the contract(s) will be for an initial term of 3 years with an option to extend the contact by up to a further 2 years subject to contract performance and budget availability. Contract payments will be made monthly in arrears.
Deadline for submission: Midday on 3rd July 2023

- Helping to prevent homelessness and/or to support Service Users who have been homeless into settled accommodation
- Helping Service Users to access complementary services aimed at improving for example their wellbeing, financial situation and employability.
