Shrewsbury's The Hive charity gets £350,000 in lottery funding
The Hive celebrates after receiving £350,000 from the National Lottery to support young adults struggling with the transition to independence
The Hive is celebrating after being awarded £350,000 in National Lottery funding to support its work. Based in Belmont, Shrewsbury, The Hive will use this funding to support young adults, aged 16 – 30 who are facing particular challenges, to develop life skills through engagement with creative media.
VERSE-atility dance and music project with Young Carers at The Hive
The funding comes in the form of 2 projects: MYC Music (£91,570), with a particular focus on song-writing and recording over 2 years – and MYCollege (£266,081) which focuses on a whole range of creative media over 5 years, including outreach to different areas of the County to support participation. The Hive is already working with existing partners to identify young adults who could benefit from the new projects and will be looking for new partners in Shropshire and Telford as the work progresses.
The new funding from The National Lottery Community Fund, which distributes money raised by National Lottery players for good causes and is the largest community funder in the UK, will see sessions for 16 – 30 year olds expanded to broaden into a full programme of different creative experiences. These will help them to build relationships with others experiencing similar challenges and provide opportunities for them to develop their own support network.
At the same time, The Hive will be able to provide a support worker for sessions, additional one-to-one mentoring for those with specific needs; outreach to partner organisations to provide taster sessions; training opportunities for partners and The Hive’s pool of freelance artists and technical and administrative support for The Hive’s own team.
Sal Hampson, Programmes & Projects Manager says: “We’re delighted that The National Lottery Community Fund has recognised our work in this way. Now, thanks to National Lottery players we will be able to press on with our plans to develop a holistic programme of support for young adults struggling with the transition to independence. This is important because it helps both the participants to build relationships with others facing similar challenges and to create their own supportive circles of friends and peers. It also supports The Hive in our quest to showcase the positive impact that creativity can have to health and wellbeing”
Dan Greenwood (volunteer at The Hive), says: “Volunteering with the Hive is the absolute highlight of my week, it’s a privilege and the team continuously guide and support me through the process - even helping me toward some independent work in a similar field. I wouldn’t be where or who I am without The Hive and look forward to working with them as the programmes continue to grow and develop!"

Culture Central invites you to an information session on Fri 19th July, to find out about how artists and arts organisations can get involved in the Aston Expressway ‘Pop up Central Park’ this September.
As part of International Car Free Day on 22nd September 2019, a 1-mile section of the A38 Aston Expressway will be closed for the day, and filled with events and activities for local people to enjoy on foot or by bicycle. It aims to demonstrate the huge potential of such bold initiatives, both for promoting and supporting health and wellbeing in the City, and giving people the opportunity to see Birmingham from a different perspective. Taking place on such an iconic stretch of road, this event is also likely to attract significant high profile media coverage. The organisers are very keen for the City’s arts and cultural scenes to be a key part of the event, so Culture Central is hosting an information session for artists and arts organisations to find out how they can get involved. The session takes place on Friday 19th July from 1.30pm to 3pm, in the Gowling Room at Birmingham Hippodrome (Thorpe Street entrance), and will be hosted by Steve Rose, Deputy Chief Executive of the Active Wellbeing Society.

Arts Connect – New look website has launched!
Arts Connects new look website launched on the 1st May, on it you will find lots of useful information, including a Local Cultural Education Partnerships (LCEPs) directory. http://www.artsconnect.co.uk
National Criminal Justice Arts Alliance’s new guidance for artists and arts organisations interested in working in criminal justice settings, Enhancing arts and culture in criminal justice settings – a partnership approach.
The guide outlines the complex nature of the criminal justice system and makes the case for why reaching out through the arts to those who are socially excluded is valuable, not only to the individual, but for arts and culture collectively.
It includes step-by-step guidance on delivering work in criminal justice settings and principles of best practice - putting individuals with complex needs at the heart of effective interventions, encouraging partnership work and ensuring artistic quality.
We are grateful to Edward Argar MP, Under Secretary of State at the Ministry of Justice and Darren Henley, Chief Executive at Arts Council England, for supporting the guide and writing forewords. We are also indebted to the organisations and individuals that contributed to the case studies in the guide, which demonstrate innovative partnership approaches and excellence in both prisons and in community settings.
We hope the guide will foster new relationships, inspire new programmes and encourage artists, organisations and institutions to make brave, new, quality work in criminal justice settings.

Girls 4 STEM Pilot Project Open to Applications
The aim of this pilot project is to promote and teach Science, Engineering, Technology and Maths subjects (STEM) to girls in attractive and engaging ways, with a view to addressing the ongoing skills gap in the STEM sectors within the EU and especially the shortfall of women and increasing STEM drop-out rates of girls. The underlying rationale is also to empower girls to learn and encourage them to become leaders in tech.
This aim will be achieved through a two-fold action. Firstly, a network of schools, universities, high education institutions and companies will be set up. It will serve as a platform to support the advancement of girls in STEM education and careers, to exchange best practices and to raise awareness of girls all over Europe concerning the full spectrum of education and training options. Secondly, no-cost summer camps for 13-18 year-old girls (typically 1 or 2 weeks long) will be designed to introduce middle and high school girls to a broad range of STEM subjects, in particular software engineering principles and programming languages.
The experiences and insights collected in the course of the summer camps and other actions will be used by the network to provide recommendations and a set of ready-to-use guidelines available for reproduction of the events at local level.
The following types of activities are eligible under this call: -The summer camps featuring experiments, field trips and lab-based activities to show work in science, technology, engineering and math careers. -Teaching the principles of software engineering: algorithms, structure of programmes, computer systems. -Teaching how to code, with a focus on real tools (such as Python, Ruby, Javascript, HTML, CSS , or any other relevant). -Recruiting preferably female STEM teachers for the camps, to act as role models. - Awareness-raising events organised by the network members (social media/traditional media campaigns to highlight the need for girls in STEM, workshops to inform parents, teachers and female audience about the full spectrum of education and training options, days of Open Doors, school visits); Deliverable: ready-to-use packaged guidance on the organisation of STEM camps, easily reproducible by other partners at local level ; Report on activities carried out with best practice described and recommendations for further action; Conferences, seminars; Training activities; Awareness and dissemination actions; Actions aiming at the creation and improvement of networks, exchanges of good practices; Studies, analyses, mapping projects.
The following types of applicants are targeted by this call for proposals: ICT companies; Companies with technical departments and technical training facilities; Universities and research centres ; Secondary schools with science curricula; Institutions and organisations organizing STEM extra-curricular activities; Other actors. In order to be eligible, a proposal must be submitted by a consortium composed of at least two legal entities from different countries.

The total budget earmarked for the co-financing of projects under this call for proposals is estimated at €350.000. The Commission expects to fund one proposal.
