A Very Happy New Year to you all! As we move into another year it is interesting to reflect on 2018 which saw a number of exciting developments. Joint Training received national recognition for the following work:

We are delighted to have been able to increase the strong team of Experts by Experience / Family Carers who are actively involved in the development and delivery of a range of courses relating to Adult Learning Disabilities, Autism, Mental Health, Acquired Brain Injury, Diversity and Domestic Abuse. Their contributions are invaluable and provide a very powerful insight into the subjects being explored.
Finally, we would like to thank all our valued customers for their support in 2018. Between April and December we delivered training to 5,537 learners, an increase of 29.1% from the previous year!

Joint Training now has a Facebook page - please 'like' us to receive news and updates on both Joint Training and topical national events. We are also planning to post last minute information on courses, e.g. cancellations due to adverse weather, and hope that this proves a useful means of providing urgent information to our customers.

Shropshire Council has been shortlisted for a Local Government Chronicle Award 2019 for our co-production work to design and develop the My Enquiry My Safety Plan Communication Cards. Shropshire’s Joint Training and Safeguarding teams along with Taking Part, Radbrook Nursing Home, Derwen College and Shropshire Partners in Care took part in workshops to design and develop these new communication tools to support service users. Mary Johnson, Joint Training and Sarah Hollinshead-Bland, Service Manager, Operations led on this work. This innovative work will support the person to tell their story, give their views, understand why information is gathered and be actively engaged in the creation of their Safety Plan. The cards will be available to purchase from Joint Training for £24.99 plus postage and packing.

We have designed a new course that explores the role of mental health carers and how professionals support them. This resulted from consultation with Midlands Partnership NHS Foundation Trust who were already delivering training to their staff on supporting carers. In order to reach a wider audience and link to the All Age Carers Strategy for Shropshire, it was felt that this training would sit well with Joint Training. |
The course explores the work that is taking place to improve the relationship between carers and professionals; by the Mental Health Trust, carers themselves, local councils and our partners in Shropshire. As such it is a course that is open to both carers and professionals, with the hope being that greater learning will take place if there is an improved awareness of each other’s perspective. Readers may be interested in a new Guide for safe staffing which has been produced by Skills for Care to help employers get the right quantity and quality of staff to meet the needs of their service, and meet the regulatory standards of the Care Quality Commission (CQC). It explains what the CQC will inspect around safe staffing and will help you decide and maintain safe staffing levels, embed safe recruitment practices and ensure your staff are safe and competent.
To support good practice in recruitment, Joint Training are offering a new course - Principles of Values Based Recruitment in Social Care & Health. This session for team leaders and managers working in adult care and health services aims to improve knowledge of Values Based Recruitment. Age UK have released a really useful pack for service providers on supporting older LGBT individuals accessing health and social care - Safe to be Me. This resource provides useable information on difficulties faced by the LGBT+ community. The checklist within the pack is a great starting point for service providers.
In support of this, Joint Training is pleased to offer a new addition to our 'Diverse Shropshire' suite of sessions - Diverse Shropshire: LGBT people accessing Health and Social Care. This will be presented by SAND (Safer Ageing No Discrimination) and provide an insight on experiences and the impact of discrimination felt by LGBT+ individuals using Health and Social Care services. We are very pleased to offer a new training opportunity around profound and multiple learning disability. This masterclass will be delivered by Mark Gray, a recognised expert in PMLD and will focus on developing a wider range of communication tools as part of making reasonable adjustments, Mental Capacity Assessments or for Advocacy Development with service users. ,Does your organisation provide services for older people with care and support needs including dementia? Joint Training provides courses tailored to the needs of services, to help staff manage challenging behaviours in a way that keeps everyone safe.
The courses which may be of particular benefit to older people's services include:
MAPA® Safe Care: this one day course is for workers who provide direct care to people who can become anxious, frightened or afraid. This includes a range of ways to provide support before, during and after a crisis.
MAPA® Dementia Capable Care Behaviours (DCCB): this two day course focuses on an abilities based approach and aims to give staff the knowledge, skills and confidence to deal with behavioural challenges presented by people living with dementia.
