FREE Diabetes Awareness Programme

Shropshire RCC are hosting a Diabetes Awareness Programme on 28th June and 5th July in Severn Fields Health Village, Sundorne Road, Shrewsbury.  

The Programme is held over two Tuesday afternoons, 1.45 – 4.30 pm.  There will be talks on Healthy Eating, Medication Management, Foot Care, Eye-screening and two Exercise taster sessions.  The programme is free of charge to anyone in Shropshire who has Diabetes, plus their families, and anyone who is concerned about developing the condition.  

Places must be booked in advance but booking is easy – just phone Susie on 01743 342160 or email susie.hancock@shropshire-rcc.org.uk. 

This week, 13th to 17th June, The Family Information Service will be working with the School Nursing Team to help promote the launch of ‘Fit Families’ – working on healthy lifestyles and exercise etc.

They will be doing a live Question & Answer session across social media on Wednesday evening (15th June 2016). The Q&A is live on Facebook from 7.30 - 8.30pm. Parents can like the page, and post a question about any health related concerns for their school aged child. The Lead Nurse for healthy weight is joining the Q&A to answer any questions parents ask and to talk about the new Fit Families programme.

Make a Noise in Libraries fortnight on 6-19 June 2016

During Make a Noise in Libraries fortnight, between Monday 6 June and Sunday 19 June 2016, Shropshire Libraries will be highlighting their audio, large print and e-books for adults, young people and children to support the Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB) annual campaign to improve access to books and information for blind and partially-sighted people in our community.

Stuart West, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for leisure and culture, said:

“Public libraries are places for everyone, and I am pleased that Shropshire Libraries will underline that commitment. I hope that as many people as possible will come to find out what’s available for blind and partially-sighted people in Shropshire.”

The theme for this year is ‘bridging the generation gap’, and libraries will be running a number of events.

Dementia Awareness

Aims to: Enable learners to gain knowledge of what Dementia is, the different forms and how others can have impact on the person with dementia

Our goal is to end domestic abuse

News from our partners Shropshire Community Safety Partnership

Shropshire’s Community Safety Partnership is supporting West Mercia Police’s campaign to tackle domestic abuse in the run up and during Euro 2016.

West Mercia Police has issued a warning to offenders as the start of the tournament approaches.

Our goal

Officers are warning offenders that, if they kick off at home, they could face a 28-day ban from the victim’s home. Domestic Violence Protection Notices (DVPN) and Domestic Violence Protection Orders (DVPO) are designed to protect victims of domestic abuse and their children by giving them the space, time and support to plan a safer future by keeping the offender away. Officers are also distributing posters among local communities to raise awareness of the agencies and support available for victims of domestic abuse.

Raising Awareness of Frailty & Supported Self-care event

 There will be two events held in Telford and Wrekin and Shrewsbury on the following dates:

         Telford - Wednesday 15th June 2016 at The Ramada Hotel

 Shrewsbury - Wednesday 13th July 2016 at The Shrewsbury Town Football Club

There are 3 different sessions that you can participate in, these are:

9.00-11.00am

12.00-2.30pm (includes lunch at 12)

3.00-5.00pm

This event is designed for up to 25 participants per session. These innovative and interactive 2-hour sessions are designed to build understanding and empathy for older people with frailty and introduce the core principles and skills of supported self-care for this population group. The events are designed for care professionals for whom attending a whole day training event is not feasible and are based on individual learning and experience. They complement the multi-disciplinary, multi-agency team based sessions and focus on awareness building, imparting knowledge, highlighting skills and providing a practical, empathy building experience through the Virtual Reality simulation.
