East Surrey partners come together to support successful TB screening event
Great collaboration between East Surrey Place partners and Surrey County Council led to a very successful community tuberculosis (TB) screening event in Redhill recently.
GP Federation Alliance for Better Care (ABC) was approached by Surrey County Council’s Public Health team who had identified Redhill as an area with a high number of TB cases within the homeless community, and readily agreed to take part, and to broaden the event by offering health checks.
Active case finding is part of a national strategy to find cases of active TB early and support patients to take a full course of treatment and get cured.
ABC supported Public Health to set up the event, the first of its kind in Surrey. They worked with homeless charity Renewed Hope who offered their venue for the event, and also funded free hot meals and taxi rides for attendees.
First Community’s Health Inclusion team was also involved in the project, to invite members of the travelling community to attend, and Reigate and Banstead Borough Council’s Housing Team promoted the event to local people in temporary accommodation.
Inspiring future generations at Brooklands Innovation Academy
400 students aged 12-14 visited historic Brooklands Museum on Tuesday 3 October to explore the different Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) careers available, through hands-on workshops and hearing firsthand from professionals working in these areas.
The Brooklands Innovation Academy was held at the birthplace of British motorsport and aviation for a second year, a key partner of the National Science Summer School programme.
An apt setting to inspire young people, with an ethos of innovation, entrepreneurship and endeavour, core values which are still completely relevant today.
The aim of Brooklands Innovation Academy is to inspire the workforce of the future to consider a career in STEM.
This ties in with the North West Surrey Health and Care Alliance’s (NWS Alliance) aim of being an employer of choice, by attracting and retaining local and diverse talent.
NWS Alliance is one of several local organisations which sponsor the Brooklands Innovation Academy event, which is part of a year-round programme of linked STEM activities.
The event has acted as a catalyst connecting the NHS, schools, colleges, universities and businesses and encouraging collaboration.
Success for St John Ambulance pop-up treatment centre in Guildford
During university freshers week, volunteers from national healthcare and first aid charity St John Ambulance operated a Night-Time Economy pop-up treatment centre in Guildford in partnership with Guildford and Waverley Health and Care Alliance.
Skilled first aiders and healthcare professionals were on hand to offer guidance and support. They also worked closely with police officers and venue staff to ensure individuals got the help they needed.
In addition to first aid, the St John team was able to assist with general welfare, which included services like phone charging, access to water, and practical support for a safe journey home.
The pop-up service provided a safe space for students and those not in the university community to seek medical and/or welfare attention during freshers week in Guildford. St John volunteers also worked alongside other organisations including the Street Angels, who assisted with their efforts to care for those who needed it.
Virtual Pulling Together - 2 years on event
Thanks to the 100+ people who attended the recent Surrey Downs Health and Care Partnership Pulling Together – 2 Years On event, which was an opportunity to come together and hear about the community initiatives taking place across Surrey Downs.
Through short videos that brought each project to life, in the voices and words of the people behind these initiatives, we learnt about different innovative ways in which communities can be supported to flourish.
A special mention must go to Preston Football club’s young coach, Lorcan, who talked about making friends at the club and being allowed to make mistakes.
A panel of distinguished speakers: Donna Hall OBE, Lis Paice OBE, Lord Crisp, Sir Nigel Ham and Paul Corrigan CBE shared insights on ‘where next?’ for creating a healthier Surrey Downs, and engaged in thought provoking discussions on building healthy, resilient, connected and empowered communities.
