Council agrees 'significant step towards tunnels'
At a meeting on Wednesday 25th June, Shetland Islands Council agreed to commission a study described by its Leader as representing "a significant step towards the construction of tunnels between our islands".
Isles MP Alistair Carmichael has welcomed the news, saying he’s glad that progress is being made.
The primary purpose of the meeting was to approve the Network Strategy - Strategic Outline Case (SOC) report, presented by Stantec in partnership with COWI, Mott Macdonald and ProVersa. The SOC is designed to establish the case for investment in ferries and harbours and, in some cases, fixed links, including tunnels.
Councillors also agreed to fund a study to establish the commercial and financial viability of fixed links and the future steps required to move the project forward.

Cullivoe Road contract awarded
Local contractor CW Johnson Plant Ltd will construct the new 6.8 metre wide two-lane B9082 Gutcher to Cullivoe road that will replace the current single-track road. The work is expected to take two years with initial groundworks expected to begin this summer. Disruption over this period will be minimal with the 4.5km of new road constructed off the current alignment.
The total project cost is expected to be around £13.3M, which will be funded from the use of Council reserves and borrowing.

Tingwall runway resurfacing completed
The resurfacing of the runway at Tingwall airport is now complete, with inter-island flights resuming earlier this week.
Work began in early May to resurface the runway, which was largely completed on schedule in around four weeks by the Council’s Roads Service, aided by good weather during the period. The work saw over 3,300 tonnes asphalt laid along the 805 metre length of the runway, with over 2,700 tonnes of crushed aggregate material also laid around the runway perimeter.

Ferry linkspan works on Papa Stour route
Following a rescheduling of works, planned maintenance on the linkspans at West Burrafirth and Papa Stour ferry terminals will now take place in the middle of August.
There will be no vehicle access to the Papa Stour ferry at West Burrafirth ferry terminal on Wednesday 13th August, or at the Papa Stour ferry terminal on Wednesday 20th August. Pet Owners - Be Tick Aware this Summer
The Shetland Animal Health scheme has warned of an increase in reports of ticks being found on pets this summer.
Owners are advised to protect their pets from ticks and the diseases they carry by checking their pets daily.
If you find a tick, remove it carefully using a tick removing device. The PDSA has step by step advice on how to do this safely on their website.
Contact your vet to get more advice about using preventative products, and keep your pet safe this summer.

Treat your sheep for lice now
The best time to treat your flock for lice is immediately after shearing.
The Shetland Animal Health Scheme is encouraging all crofters to treat their animals now, rather than wait until winter.
Shearing removes the majority of lice and exposes those that are remaining, making them more vulnerable to the treatments. This is more effective than treating animals with long wool, which often results in a reduction of lice, but does not eradicate them.
Speak to your vet about treatment now.

New pilot scheme aims to open the door to careers in Care in Shetland
Shetland Islands Council is testing a new way to recruit for care jobs across the isles – focusing on the values and personal qualities people bring, rather than formal qualifications or past experience. If you’re someone who’s compassionate, respectful and enjoys working with others, this could be your opportunity to start a rewarding career in care. Training and support will be provided, and the application process has been simplified to help more people take that first step.
