Sheffield residents call for more recycling in the city
Improvements will be made to Sheffield’s recycling collection services next year to make it easier for residents to recycle.
The changes will see:
- The addition of plastic pots, tubs, trays, aerosols, foil, and cartons into existing brown bins for recycling by 31 March 2026.
- In summer 2026, households will receive a 240 litre blue bin for paper and card, to replace the current 140 litre blue bin to make it easier to recycle paper and card.
- The addition of plastic films into existing brown bins by 31 March 2027.
Further information will be provided to all households prior to the changes taking place next year.
In the meantime, you can recycle the above items at your local Household Waste Recycling Centre.
Sheffield schools join Built for Change project to tackle climate crisis
The council's Transport, Regeneration and Climate committee have approved a grant fund to support twelve education settings across Sheffield as part of this exciting new project.
The climate is changing, and young people are some of the most vulnerable to the negative impacts of these changes. Settings have received support from charity Let's Go Zero to complete climate action plans, and will now receive funding for climate adaptation measures to reduce the impact of overheating and extreme rain events. These measures will also benefit the health, wellbeing and learning of young people.
£10m available to make homes warmer and greener
Over £10 million has been secured across two Government-backed initiatives - the Warm Homes: Local Grant scheme and the Warm Homes: Social Housing Fund.
The Warm Homes: Local Grant scheme is being delivered in partnership with E.ON, to help improve energy efficiency for eligible households.
The Warm Homes: Social Housing Fund will deliver energy upgrades to around 1,300 council homes, helping residents to reduce energy bills and improve living conditions.
Both funds will prioritise homes with an EPC rating of D or below, along with other eligibility criteria. For further details see the links below.
Residential cycle parking rolls out across city
After trialing eight residential cycle parking hangars across Crookes and Walkley, the scheme is being expanded across the city. The next phase of hangars will be installed from October across Burngreave, Heeley, Meersbrook, Nether Edge, Park Hill Flats and Woodseats. Proposals to further expand the scheme in 2026 are being developed, and you can keep up to date with the project via the button below.
Renting a space in a hangar is £72 per year, and they are managed by third-party providers Falco UK (Crookes and Walkley) and Cyclehoop (rest of city).
Be flood ready
Following a historically dry spring and summer, there's a higher than usual likelihood of a wet and stormy autumn, with September rainfall far higher than average. The hot, dry summer has left the ground hard and vulnerable to flash flooding (Water situation: August 2025 summary - GOV.UK).
Connected by Water is a partnership of organisations working across South Yorkshire to help our people and places become more resilient to the impacts of heavy rainfall and flooding. Visit their website to find out how you can reduce the risks from flooding for yourself and others, and what to do during extreme rain events.
You can sign up for flood alerts for your area by clicking the link below.
