How to make use of mediation
Why mediation?
At Sheffield City Council, the Housing Service partner with ‘MESH Mediation Sheffield’ to provide tenants with access to mediation services.
We know that the vast majority of tenants simply want to be able to enjoy their home, be good neighbours and want to be surrounded by other people with these values and outlook.
But at times, arguments or disputes escalate to a point where they can’t be easily resolved and to a point where they have a significant impact on people’s enjoyment of their homes and neighbourhood.
Mediation can help to prevent this and can help to address matters, either at an early stage or when problems have become more long-standing.

Positive messages from mediation
MESH have collated the following feedback from people who have engaged in mediation via the various organisations that they work with. These comments offer an insight into the positive outcomes from mediation.
“I really appreciated the time they took to talk to my son - and listen to his feelings. There was no pressure at all.”
“I feel so much better; felt miserable before. I could not have sorted things out with my neighbour without mediation.”
“Anna and Lesley gave us each individual support and encouragement and were excellent, objective catalysts in the process towards reconciliation. We will both look back on this and be grateful for their involvement.”
“…it was as if we’ve known them for years – that’s how comfortable we was with them…”
“For me, it could not have been better.”
“MESH have had some really good results that have helped neighbours who have had bitter fall outs involving the wider community, to be able to live their lives without being frightened of more trouble with their neighbours. Some of these disputes have gone on for years, and caused a lot of distress, with people feeling that they need to move out of their homes…It is not an easy option as it means being open, honest and perhaps willing to compromise, but for the tenants that have gone through it, it has made a huge difference in being able to live comfortably in their neighbourhood.”
“Since mediation, I have had no more police visits, no abuse, no foul language and no threats of violence – how much better is that?”
“The service was amazing and helped resolve the problems with my neighbour.”
“The time spent with the mediators was time well-spent.”
“MESH offer a fantastic service, that I’m sure provide great comfort to a lot of families.”

Listening to your views and acting on them
From time to time, you will be asked what you think about our Approach to Handling ASB, How we make a positive contribution to your Neighbourhood and that we Ask your views, act on them and keep you informed of what we have done as a result.
This is really important to me and I hope that sharing this update reassures and gives you confidence that we listen and act.
Thank you for taking the time to hear from me.
