As the temperatures are set to drop, get prepared for winter with our round-up of useful information including bins, waste and recycling, travel and transport, and staying healthy.
Winter gritting
Our fleet of 19 gritters and their crews are on standby 24/7 to respond to any reports of freezing temperatures or forecasts of snow and ice.
We grit 60% of the road network in priority order. Priority one routes include the city’s main routes which link Sheffield with other major cities and motorways.
Priority two routes include bus routes, link roads, roads where key public service facilities are located as well as rural routes.
Visit our winter road maintenance page for more information.

Welcome Places
We're supporting a network of Welcome Places across the city. These are spaces where you can go to stay warm, feel safe and welcomed, and access support.
You can find a map of Welcome Places on the Voluntary Action Sheffield website.
Community Helpline
As the weather gets colder, it can become harder to keep your home warm due to rising gas and electricity costs.
Our Community Helpline is available to support anyone struggling with the cost of bills or struggling to afford essentials like food.
Call our Community Helpline on 0114 273 4567
Damp, mould and condensation
During the colder months it’s more common for homes to suffer from damp, mould, and condensation problems.
Visit our website for information on how to help prevent and manage damp, mould, and condensation in your home.
If you are concerned about damp and mould in a council or private rented property, you can report it online.
Support for rough sleepers
Support and advice is available for people who sleep rough or are at risk of doing so.
This includes the Sheffield Street Outreach Service which helps people find accommodation and support.
Overnight accommodation is offered to anyone who would be sleeping rough during extremely cold weather.
School closures
In the event of extreme weather, schools in Sheffield have different ways of communicating with parents about closures, delayed openings or early closures.
Please check with your school or local parent groups on how this is done for your child's school if you are unsure.
