Dark nights, Halloween & Bonfire Night
October 2024
Remember, remember the 5th of November…
Its approaching that time of the year when the leaves crunch underfoot, fireworks light up the sky and things go bump-in-the-night!
Whilst this is a great chance for people to have fun, enjoy community events and gather with friends and family, we know that some people in the community may go too far and cause anti-social behaviour (ASB). As always, its easy and straightforward to report ASB to us. The different ways to do this are:
- in person at your nearest Neighbourhood Office or First Point
- in writing to the Housing and Neighbourhood Service, PO Box 5967, Sheffield, S2 9GH
- to your Neighbourhood Officer
- by phoning us on 0114 293 0000 or emailing: TenancyEnforcementAndSustainment@sheffield.gov.uk
Whatever your plans for the next few weeks, we want everyone to stay safe and help those around them stay safe. I have asked Luke Simpson and James Armitage from our Fire Safety Team to write a short message below about staying safe around bonfire night. The Fire Safety Team have also included details around a great community event in Sheffield if you are looking for ideas.
Be aware & stay safe – a message from the Fire Safety Team
As we are fast approaching Bonfire Night we wanted to share some information and guidance on how to ensure that the occasion can be enjoyed as safely as possible.
Injury statistics from the NHS Burns and scalds department suggest an increase in visits to the hospitals in relation to burns increase by upward of 27% of the quarter on bonfire weekend. Property damage is also a risk with insurance companies stating that damages can be more than £234,000 following fireworks hitting roofs and outbuildings.
The safest way to enjoy this period is by attending organised events such as Autumn Lights at Don Valley Bowl and Illuminate The Gardens 2024 as well as lots of local events for you to enjoy.
Please remember, you are not permitted to have a bonfire in your garden. Any bonfires identified as taken place in a council house garden will be deemed as a breach of your conditions of tenancy and appropriate action will be taken.
Listening to your views and acting on them
From time to time, you will be asked what you think about our Approach to Handling ASB, How we make a positive contribution to your Neighbourhood and that we Ask your views, act on them and keep you informed of what we have done as a result.
This is really important to me, and I hope that through my regular communication with you, this provides you with reassurance that we listen and act.
Thank you for taking the time to hear from me.
