Gritter leaving our depot to start a gritting run earlier this year
From 1st October until 30th April, our fleet of 19 gritters will be on standby ready to respond to whatever the winter weather has in store for us.
Did you know that we have five weather stations across Sheffield that provides us with up-to-the-minute weather forecasts that helps us plan when we need to grit the city's roads?
We also have the largest precautionary gritting network of any UK local authority and over 60% of that network is treated before bad weather is forecast to help stop snow and ice forming while we provide a reactive service during incidents of bad weather.

One of the many questions we get asked from residents over the winter months is about grit bins.
Did you know that we have more grit bins in the city than any other local authority in the country?
There are over 2,200 grit bins at various locations across Sheffield which are checked and filled at the start of each winter season.
You can find the locations of all the bins, as well as information about reporting an issue with a grit bin and how grit actually works, along with other useful and up-to-date winter information by clicking the button below.
Pupils from Ballifield Primary School on our recent gritter visit.
In the last Streets Ahead bulletin, we asked you to help us name our fleet of gritters and we've also enlisted the help of some of our schools.
Over the last month, pupils from 12 of our primary and secondary schools have had the opportunity to get up close and personal with one of our gritters when they made a stop in their playground.
The Year 5 pupils at Ballifield Primary School (pictured) had a great fun exploring the gritter and have submitted their name into the competition.
There's still time though for you to enter our competition.
If you have a creative and imaginative name that reflects the winter season and the city of Sheffield, whether it's the city's landmarks, heritage or famous sons or daughters, we want to hear from you.
Full information, along with the terms and conditions and where to send your entry can be found by clicking the button below.
But be quick as the deadline for entries is 5pm on Friday, 11 October 2024.
Our team completing a permanent repair to a pothole recently
Potholes are not just unique to the roads of Sheffield - they are a national issue, covering all road types.
Due to a wet winter and spring some of the road surfaces in Sheffield were more prone to pothole formation. Our teams have identified and responded quickly to repair and protect the roads.
Since January 2024, we have repaired over 2,000 hazardous potholes and repaired larger areas of roads at the same time to prevent pothole formation, as we head into another winter season.
Did you know that we prioritise potholes into category one, two and three?
There is a lot more useful information on potholes and how to report them on the Streets Ahead website by clicking the button below.
