The front cover of "Sparks from Sheffield Smoke: A Perthshire Poet's Legacy Revisited", by S.K. Buchanan
Nineteenth-century Scottish poet Francis Buchanan published his second volume of poetry in Sheffield in 1882. "Sparks from Sheffield Smoke: A Series of Local and Other Poems" offers rhyme inspired by settings such as Wincobank Hill, Sheffield Manor, Haddon Hall and Ecclesall Churchyard.
A selection has been revived by his great-great-grandaughter S.K. Buchanan in this fascinating insight comprising local history, bygone celebrated poets, the Duftys of Sheffield, and war poems.

Part of the cover of Teatime at Peggy's, showing an interior decorated in an Anglo-Indian style
If you missed our "Teatime at Peggy's" event in July, never fear, there will be another opportunity to catch it at the end of August!
For 15 years, Sheffield journalists Clare Jenkins and Stephen McClarence visited Jhansi, a town in central India, to talk to - and take tea with - members of the fast-disappearing Anglo-Indian community there.
Hear their stories: from Monsoon Toad Balls (where 'the ugliest, most hideous-looking man' would win the prize) to moonlight picnics in the jungle, dancing bears and pet mongooses, and Anglo-Indian cookery that embraced goat's brain curry, Mulligatawny soup and toad-in-the-hole.
