The Sleep Charity

Sheffield Children's Hospital have worked with the Sleep Charity to produce advice around sleep for children with SEND.

There are two downloadable information sheets. One about sleep and sensory issues, the other about when a parent is considering a specialist bed e.g. safety sleeper.

SEND the Basics Training

This training is for anyone who works with children and young people, as well as parents, carers, and anyone supporting someone with SEND. It has been developed by the local authority, citywide SENCOs, NHS South Yorkshire ICB, and Sheffield Parent Carer Forum.

Watch the four short training videos to get a basic understanding of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).  It has been added to the Local Offer 0-25 webpages.

The training videos cover:

• what SEND means.
• understanding the language and tools used in SEND.
• important parts of legislation about SEND.
• how children and young people’s needs are identified and supported.
• where to find more information.

Preparing for Adulthood Transition Guide

Over the past 10 months, Sheffield City Council have been working in partnership with the Sheffield Parent Carer Forum to coproduce a new Preparing for Adulthood - Transition Guide for young people with SEND. The guide provides information for parents and carers about things to think about as young people with special educational needs and disabilities move into their teenage years and into adulthood. It covers from Year 9 (age 14/15) to into adulthood (up to 25 years old). Information includes:

• What should happen when
• What services are available
• Where to find out about different opportunities
• Where to get help if you need it.

The Transition Guide online

The Transition Guide has been put onto the Local Offer webpages which means it can be translated into other languages.  It has been re-written from the PDF guide and is aimed at young people themselves.  Please share the link with your young people.

Holiday Activities

An advice page has been created on the Local Offer webpages (part of the Sheffield Directory) that sign posts you to some of the places that offer holiday activities. This also includes the Holiday Activities with Food (HAF) summer programme which is running from Monday 24 July to Friday 2 September.

If you know of any clubs that would be good to feature then please e-mail localoffer@sheffield.gov.uk.

You can also search for other clubs and activities and holiday clubs on the Sheffield Directory. Use the filters at the left-hand side of the page to narrow the search results.

Sheffield Children’s is committed to providing equality in access to its health care services. They recognise that for some children and young people this can be difficult.

Sheffield Mencap & Gateway - Health Support Service

Sheffield Mencap & Gateway are working with the Integrated Care Board (ICB) and GP practices across Sheffield to support people with learning disabilities to attend their Annual Health Check and appointments for covid, flu and pneumonia vaccinations.

Sheffield Children’s Foundation Trust Information Resource Library

Sheffield Children’s Information Resource Library has lots of health information for you to look at and read.  There is advice on autism, speech and language, epilepsy, hearing and sleep to name but a few.

Parents information sessions

Sheffield SENDIAS (Sheffield SEND Information and Advice Service) offer free online information sessions. These are for parents and carers of young people aged 0-25 with SEND.  The sessions answer some of the most frequently asked questions.

There are 3 sessions available, which run in both the daytime and evenings:

- Book Checking a Draft EHC Plan

Parenting support

Sheffield’s Family Hubs runs seminars, discussion groups and programmes to give parents practical help and advice. Some have been specifically developed for families of children and young people with SEND.
