Who we are...
Opportunity Sheffield is made up of many programmes, which help employers, employed and unemployed people advance their careers through new jobs, apprenticeships, work placements, courses and many other training options.
We also host a range of regular events, where potential candidates, employees and/or employers can come meet us and each other for a chat about their development needs.
Here’s our round up of what’s coming up in May and early June 2023…
Events
Sheffield’s Working Jobs Fair: Tuesday 9 May & Tuesday 6 June
Sheffield's Working Jobs Fairs, in collaboration with Jobcentre Plus, take place in a different area of Sheffield each month.
Come talk to a range of local employers about their current roles, plus talk to the Opportunity Sheffield team about other work and training options.
Regular employers include Sheffield City Council, Sheffield City Trust, NHS, Keepmoat Homes and many more.
Our next two events are at:
- Hillsborough Arena, Middlewood Road, S6 4HA: Tuesday 9 May, 10am - 12pm
- Sheffield Manor Lodge,197 Manor Lane, S2 1UJ: Tuesday 6 June, 10am-12pm

Mental Health Awareness at Work: Friday 26 May
Our Advance Sheffield team will be hosting Mental Health Awareness at Work at South Yorkshire Housing Association (SYHA) on Friday 26 May, 10am - 2pm
There will be talks from SYHA, Mental Health Matters and Cavendish Cancer Care, as well as Advance Sheffield, regarding mental health training. There will be a chance for discussions, networking and lunch will be provided.
The Moor Market: Friday 9 June
Representatives from each of our Opportunity Sheffield’s programmes will have a stall inside the entrance of The Moor Market on Friday 9 June.
A couple of team members will be on hand to talk you through our programmes, including Advance Sheffield (training), Advancing Digital (digital training) and Sector Routeways (sector specific training and work placements).
Come find us for a chat inside The Moor Market, Sheffield (main entrance) on Friday 9 June, 8:30am - 4pm.
ESF Positive Change
ESF Positive Change is a pre-entry engagement programme, commissioned as part of Sheffield City Council’s Ambition and Pathways to Success employment support projects, which are part-funded by the European Social Fund.
Positive Change consists of 18 projects designed to inspire, motivate and activate unemployed and economically inactive residents of Sheffield who, for whatever reason, are struggling to engage with the labour market.
Eligibility: ▪ 18+ ▪ Live in Sheffield ▪ Unemployed or economically inactive ▪ Permitted to live and work in the UK.

Sector Routeways
Sector Routeways gives local people the opportunity to gain skills, undertake work experience and enter sustained employment in one of Sheffield’s growth sectors.
Each Routeway consists of up to 2 weeks of training, with a work placement shortly after. Previous qualifications and experience are not required.
Our May ‘boot camp’ start dates are:
Early Years Education: Monday 22 May
Construction: Tuesday 23 May
Engineering & Manufacturing: Tuesday 23 May
Care: Wednesday 24 May
Digital Marketing: Thursday 25 May

Advancing Digital
The Advancing Digital programme provides South Yorkshire businesses and their employees with a fully funded learning platform.
We offer over 200 hand selected non-accredited online courses you can take in your own time, plus accredited courses taught by training providers based in Sheffield.
Our course portal is split into 8 key areas of business:
- Financial Management (eg accounting, bookkeeping)
- Resource Efficiency (eg carbon literacy, logistics)
- Customer Relationship Management (eg marketing, SEO)
- User Experience/Interface (eg coding, web design)
- People Management (eg HR, line management)
- Project Management (eg Agile, AutoCAD)
- Data/Info Management (eg Excel, computer science)
- Cyber Security (eg GDPR, staying safe online)

The Advance Sheffield programme provides a wide range of training to businesses and individuals based in South Yorkshire. Our courses include everything from construction skills, to mental health first aid to leadership and management, to many more.
Our May course start dates include:
Epilepsy, Seizure Management & Rescue Medication: Thursday 11 & Friday 12 May
This one-day course will be taught at Red Tape Central, Sheffield and offers an understanding of epilepsy, how to respond to a seizure and how to administer rescue medications.
