Government Covid-19 Plan B
The government has announced that England will move to Plan B in response to the risks of the Omicron variant. Find out what you need to do and when below.
Face coverings
From Friday 10 December
Face coverings will be mandatory for most indoor public venues including:
- Places of worship
- Theatres and cinemas
- In shops and on public transport.
They are not mandatory in hospitality settings such as pubs, restaurants, or venues where it is not practical (such as when exercising).

Working from home
From Monday 13 December
Office workers and those who can work from home should do so if they can.

NHS Covid Pass
From Wednesday 15 December (subject to parliamentary approval)
Certain venues and events will be required by law to check that all visitors aged 18 years or over are fully vaccinated, have proof of a negative test in the last 48 hours or have an exemption.
You will need to show your pass, a negative test or proof of exemption to gain entry to:
- Nightclubs
- Unseated indoor events with 500 or more attendees
- Unseated outdoor events with 4,000 or more attendees
- Any event with 10,000 or more attendees.
