Next weekend as part of the citywide Showcase festival, Central Library will be hosting a range of activity for all ages, reflecting our focus on sharing stories, creating common cultural experiences, and helping Sheffielders explore their city’s heritage.

 Creative Writing Workshop: The Streets of Sheffield
10.30am – 12noon – Lending Library A creative writing workshop for new or established writers, where we'll be looking at streets, roads and pathways in literature and poetry, then writing creatively on this subject.
The Street Names of Central Sheffield: An Illustrated Talk with David Templeman
11am – 12noon, Carpenter Room Ever-popular local historian, David Templeman will take us back through the centuries, peeling back layers of history to reveal some of the stories and people that shaped the city centre we know today.
Exploring Local Heritage Maps
12 noon – 3.30pm, Jackson Room Sheffield Libraries has one of the finest map collections in the country. Drop in and chat with librarians and archivists as they share some of their personal favourites, revealing the stories of Sheffield’s development through the centuries.
 Leave Your Mark: A Writing and Art Workshop
12 noon – 2pm, Lending Library Inspired by the thousands of stories around you, leave your mark on the walls of Central Library. Author, Nik Perring will guide you, and you’ll be shown the most effective ways to display and draw your ideas up on canvas. Suitable for young people aged 11+
Amara and the Bats with Author Illustrator Emma Reynolds
1pm – 3pm, Central Children’s Library Join author, illustrator, and environmental activist Emma Reynolds to celebrate the release of her new picture book Amara and the Bats! Passionate about storytelling and the environment, Emma will be reading from her brand-new book, sharing some big bat facts, and offering lots of creative crafty fun in this interactive session for children and families. Suitable for families and children aged 5+
 Classical Sheffield: Live in the Reading Room
From 12.30pm, Reading Room Musicians from Classical Sheffield will be performing a series of 15 minute pop-ups in the Reading Room throughout the afternoon. A treat for Classical music lovers and an opportunity to discover the magic of live performance. Drop in
Treasures from the Strong Rooms
Sessions begin at 2pm and 3pm, Carpenter Room In this guided ‘show and tell’ session, get up close to some of the varied, fascinating, and in some cases, beautiful books usually kept hidden in the Central Library strong rooms.
Sharing Poetry: Hope
2.30pm – 3.45pm – Lending Library Join fellow poetry lovers to share poems on the theme of “Hope”. Bring along your own or someone else’s poem to share, and take inspiration from the work on display as part of the Creativity during Covid exhibition .
Creativity during Covid
Exhibition - Central Library Foyer During the months of lockdown Sheffield Libraries supported a diverse community of local people as they embraced their creativity. Inspired by regular meetings, one-off workshops, and daily creative prompts, Sheffielders shared their poetry, prose, art and craft. In this exhibition, some of that work is displayed for an even wider audience to enjoy.
