8-14 June is Carers Week, a national campaign to help ‘make caring visible.’
Research shows that as many as 1 in 10 children in Sheffield cares for a member of their household who have mental or physical health needs, disabilities or substance misuse issues. The average age of a young carer is 12.
Caring responsibilities have a serious impact on the health and well being of carers: they make it difficult to do well at school and can increase isolation and poverty. Challenges posed by Coronavirus are hitting young carers particularly hard, reducing their access to support and making it difficult to pick up prescriptions and essential supplies.
In Sheffield, our campaign ‘Do you care?’ is brought to you by Sheffield City Council and the two charities that support carers in the city: Sheffield Carers Centre and Sheffield Young Carers.
We are asking adults to support young carers (aged 8-25) by helping them access vital information and resources.
