The gritting vehicles are ready for wintry weather

With winter well underway, the teams at Streets Ahead are ready to keep the city moving when freezing temperatures arrive.

And with 19 gritting vehicles ready to treat the roads, plus over 2000 grit bins across Sheffield, we are fully prepared for whatever this winter has in store.

Our gritting routes

When freezing conditions are forecast, we grit the city's roads in priority order, ensuring main arterial routes and access to emergency facilities such as hospitals are clear first and foremost.

We then move on to Priority 2 routes, which include bus routes and roads to key public services such as schools, GP surgeries and care homes.

Need a grit bin refilling?

During icy conditions we encourage people to make use of their local grit bins.

It's a good idea to help out neighbours and check on the elderly and those most vulnerable, clearing footpaths when access is required, if possible.

You can request a grit bin to be refilled via Twitter at:

Yolly the Yeti breaks the ice...

Despite the cold weather, our very own winter mascot, Yolly the Yeti, got a warm reception in the city centre a few weeks ago.

Accompanied by the Streets Ahead winter team and a gritting lorry, Snowy Steve, passers-by got the chance to ask any winter-related questions as they walked on The Moor.

Watch this space for the next chance to meet Yolly...
