Weather Watch

During times of extremely cold weather we activate our severe weather emergency protocol called ‘Weather Watch’.
Overnight accommodation is offered to anyone, including those with no recourse to public funds or no local connection, who would be sleeping rough during times of extremely cold weather.

If you need to contact us about Weather Watch, phone Housing Solutions on 0114 2736306 between 8.30am – 5pm on weekdays. During evenings and weekends, phone our out of hours Housing Solution service on 0800 7311 689 or Sheffield’s Street Outreach Team on 0800 066 5358 (free from landlines and mobiles).

Roads

The Streets Ahead team are on standby 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, ready to deal with whatever the winter weather has in store. During snow or icy periods, work happens around the clock to ensure the city can keep moving safely.

Our supply of grit is stored in the salt dome at Olive Grove which can hold up to 9,500 tonnes of grit/salt. We have 19 gritters and over 2000 grit bins, and during snow events we grit Priority 1 & 2 routes in order. We don’t grit all the pavements in the city. Find out more about our gritting routes.

A few things to remember if you are out on the roads in snowy or icy conditions:

  • Never assume a road has been gritted and always beware of black ice.
  • Try not to abandon your cars in the middle of the road in snowy conditions as this means our gritters can't get through.
  • Although we work to make the roads safer, you are responsible for driving according to the weather conditions - so drive please drive carefully.

Health & wellbeing

Here's a few tips to help keep you and those around you healthy and warm during the colder months...

  • Draw your curtains at dusk and tuck behind radiators to help keep heat inside, make sure radiators are not obstructed by furniture or curtains.
  • Wear a few layers of thin clothing rather than one thick layer; this will trap the heat better.
  • When indoors, try not to sit still for more than an hour. Get up and stretch your legs.
  • Check on frail or older neighbours or relatives, especially those living alone or who have serious illnesses to make sure they are safe, warm and well.

Council Housing

Please bear with us during adverse winter weather, when we may only get to emergency or urgent council home repairs. When this happens we have to prioritise jobs and reschedule those we can’t make.

In this situation, we will contact you to re-arrange your repair.
