Summer is the perfect time for picnics, garden parties and barbecues. A little planning can help you make the most of your food, save money and reduce waste. Love Food Hate Waste suggest using leftover barbecue food in salads, sandwiches and other meals, while picnic favourites such as quiches, sausage rolls and boiled eggs can often be enjoyed for lunch the next day. Storing food correctly and freezing any extras can help prevent good food from ending up wasted.
Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service is also encouraging residents to consider packing a picnic instead of lighting a barbecue when enjoying the countryside during hot, dry weather. Dry grass, heathland and woodland can ignite easily, and even a small spark can quickly develop into a wildfire.
If you do have a barbecue at home, make sure it is placed on a flat, non-flammable surface and well away from sheds, fences, trees and bushes. Never leave it unattended, keep a bucket of water or sand nearby, and ensure it is completely cool before disposing of it.
If you do have food that is passed its best and can no longer be eaten, remember to always unwrap it and recycle your food.
