18 young people from Somerset are celebrating after an impressive performance at a national football tournament led to 2 players being selected to represent England in a match against Wales later this year.

The group, made up of young people in care and care leavers from Somerset, travelled to Milton Keynes to take part in the Pro Alliance Champions Cup, a national tournament bringing together care-experienced young people from local authorities across the country.

Fostering in Somerset are inviting residents to drop in on their friendly information event in Wincanton this month, to discover how they could make a real difference to a child’s life.

The session is a valuable opportunity to learn more about fostering in a relaxed and welcoming setting, whether someone is ready to take the next step or simply wants to ask a few questions.

Bus passengers in Yeovil can now reach the bus station more easily after works at Glovers Walk, Yeovil have been completed.

The site will be used short-term as a green space, and has been seeded with grass which will need time – and some rain – to grow before it can be used. In the meanwhile development plans continue to progress.

Somerset Council has published proposed changes to the maximum fares that hackney carriage taxis can charge.

Hackney carriage fares are calculated using an electronic meter installed in the vehicle. As the licensing authority, Somerset Council has the power to set the maximum fares that can be charged through a published table of fares. Drivers may choose to charge less than these maximum rates.

Residents across Somerset are being urged to take part in a short, anonymous survey exploring why some people who could benefit from support for alcohol use do not come forward.

Residents, businesses and community organisations are invited to share what matters most to them and help inform the Council’s spending priorities before detailed budget proposals are developed.

Feedback will help shape future decision-making as the Council continues to balance increasing demand for services with ongoing financial pressures. The consultation is open until 27 July.
