B3191 Cleeve Hill near Watchet
Somerset Council is bidding for Government funding to reopen a vital road in the west of the county to vehicles.
The B3191 Cleeve Hill near Watchet was closed in January 2023 after cliff movement near the road was detected. A further geotechnical survey recommended it be kept closed to ensure the safety of the travelling public.

Somerset Council has announced that there will be no recycling or rubbish collections taking place on the Early May bank holiday on Monday, 4 May.
Collection days will change across Somerset following the bank holiday.

Consulting on the Government’s Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) reforms is well underway. As is the national process for local areas to submit their SEND Reform Plans. The deadline for submissions is 19 June.
Colleagues across Children’s Services are therefore currently working hard to engage and consult with as many stakeholders in as many organisations as possible to hit that tight June deadline.

Directors of Public Health across the South West of England have today welcomed Royal Assent of the Tobacco and Vapes Act 2026, describing it as a once-in-a-generation moment in the fight against the leading cause of preventable death in the region.
The new Act introduces a generational ban on the sale of tobacco to anyone born on or after 1 January 2009, new powers to create further smoke-free places, a UK-wide ban on vape advertising and sponsorship, and a licensing scheme for retailers of tobacco and nicotine products.

Parents of 16 to 19 year-olds are reminded to extend their Child Benefit claim if their teenager is staying in certain types of education or training after their GCSEs or National 5s.
Child Benefit will automatically stop on 31 August on or after a child’s 16th birthday unless parents confirm their teenager’s plans. Around 1.5 million reminder letters will be sent from late April, with most landing on doorsteps in early May.
