Somerset Council’s Executive has approved the award of new contracts for the Discharge to Assess (D2A) service, a vital part of the county’s approach to supporting people as they leave hospital and return home.
The D2A service enables people to be discharged home from hospital, where they will receive up to 6 weeks of tailored support from health and social care professionals.
A major reorganisation of Pupil Referral Units (PRUs) in Somerset designed to improve the quality and consistency of alternative provision for the county’s children and young people, has been approved.
At a meeting of Somerset Council’s Executive on Wednesday, 5 November, Lead Members agreed to consolidate the management of the county’s 4 existing PRUs to ensure a streamlined governance, and standardised approach. The new arrangements will also address historic gaps in provision, particularly in Frome and West Somerset.

Somerset Council is reminding eligible residents to get their flu vaccination if they haven’t already.
The best time to get a flu jab is in the autumn or early winter, before flu starts circulating widely. This year we are already seeing flu cases.
Flu is far more than just a bad cold. For some, it can increase the risk of developing serious lung and airway infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia or can make existing conditions worse.

Somerset Council has supported Wessex Water and Wales and West Utilities to co-ordinate and complete 2 vital infrastructure schemes in Chard.
Investments of more than £1.7 million in projects to help to alleviate sewer flooding and upgrade gas pipes have been taking place near the centre of Chard since January.

Somerset Council will be resurfacing a key road in Taunton from next week.
Work on Honiton Road will start Monday 10 November, and is scheduled to be completed on Friday 21 November.
The road will be closed on weekdays only from 9.30am to 3.30pm.

Somerset Council will be resurfacing part of the A359 through Queen Camel next week.
Work on the road will be carried out from 9.30am to 3.30pm on Tuesday and Wednesday, 11 and 12 November. The road will be open outside these times.
Advanced signage will be put up in place before the road closure to advise people of the works due to take place. While the road is closed there will be a signed diversion in place using the A303 and A371.

Parents, children, professionals, and the wider public are being encouraged to participate in the exercise to help better inform Somerset Council on what’s working well, and what changes and improvements are needed going forward.

Somerset Community Foundation (SCF) has launched its latest annual Surviving Winter appeal, raising vital funds to keep our county’s vulnerable older people warm, safe and well.
More older people will receive the Winter Fuel Payment this year thanks to changes to government policy. But the charity knows many will still have to make the impossible choice between heating and eating this winter.
Meningitis is a serious condition where the protective layers (meninges) around the brain and spinal cord become inflamed.
It has many causes, such as different germs, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi. In the UK, most cases are due to bacteria or viruses. Some of the bacteria that cause meningitis can also lead to septicaemia (blood poisoning), and both conditions can result in sepsis, which is life-threatening.

The second annual 80 Miles in Eight Days Challenge Walk has once again proved a resounding success, with 23 enthusiastic walkers covering a collective 500 miles along Somerset’s stunning coastline.
Walking on the South West Coast Path and the King Charles III England Coast Path, the event show-cased the region’s diverse landscapes – from moorlands and farmland to sweeping beaches and estuaries.
