Saxonvale site in heart of Frome
At an Extraordinary Executive meeting held in public at Frome Town Hall today (Friday, 24 October), Somerset Council Members voted in favour of exploring alternative options for the 12-acre site, including an open market sale.
The action was prompted because despite extended timelines and much goodwill, funding had not been secured to complete the purchase of the site by Mayday Saxonvale Development Ltd.
Voters in Dunster and Glastonbury have elected new councillors following recent local by-elections held to fill vacant seats on Somerset Council.
The elections, which took place yesterday (23 October 2025), saw residents turn out to choose their representatives in these 2 divisions, helping to shape the future of local decision-making and community leadership.
 The Leader of Somerset Council, Cllr Bill Revans, has expressed his frustration at news of delays to Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) reform.
A Schools White Paper was due to be published in the autumn. However the Government announced yesterday (Wednesday 22 October) that SEND reform, and other policies for schools in England, will now be published in 2026 to allow for further co-design and testing of the proposals.

Somerset Council and winter service partner Kier Transportation Ltd are working together to keep traffic on the move this winter with a fleet of 23 gritters ready to head out when freezing temperatures or snow are forecast.
Gritting involves spreading treated rock salt on roads to help prevent ice and snow build-up. This is important during cold months as it helps make roads safer and reduces weather-related disruptions.

Somerset Council has had to close Bridgwater Library temporarily following some interior ceiling damage due to roof problems.
Work is ongoing to urgently repair the roof long-term and ensure the building is fit for purpose for many years to come.
To ensure the safety of staff and the public and allow these works to proceed as quickly as possible, it is necessary to close the library until further notice.

As colder weather and rising living costs continue to put pressure on households, organisations across Somerset are joining forces to help residents stay safe, warm and well this winter.
Public Health at Somerset Council, working in partnership with NHS Somerset, Centre for Sustainable Energy (CSE), Somerset Community Foundation (SCF), Citizens Advice Somerset, and other community partners, will host a Winter Wellness Webinar on Wednesday, 5 November, between 12pm and 1pm.

Somerset Council is raising awareness this October, during Domestic Abuse Awareness Month, reminding people across Somerset that help is available for anyone experiencing domestic abuse.
Domestic abuse can affect anyone – regardless of age, gender, background, or circumstance. It isn’t always physical; it can also be emotional, psychological, economic, or sexual. What defines domestic abuse is the use of power and control to cause harm, fear, or isolation within a relationship, by a partner, ex-partner, or family member.

A trio of Somerset companies have signed up to take part in a pioneering project to help their workforce lead healthier lives by quitting smoking.
Somerset Chamber of Commerce is working with Somerset Council to deliver the pilot project as part of the Smokefree Somerset initiative.
Cleaning equipment manufacturer Numatic, in Chard, family-owned skip, tipper, plant hire and aggregate supplier S Roberts Group of Bridgwater and hand-made dessert manufacturer Marston Foods, of Frome are all taking part in a year-long scheme to help their staff stop smoking.

Somerset Council is pleased to share its In-house Landlord Annual Report for 2024/25, showcasing the achievements of the in-house landlord housing team, together with tenants and leaseholders, over the year.
Overall, the services provided achieved 76% tenant satisfaction, with 8 of 12 Tenant Satisfaction Measures (TSM) achieving above national average satisfaction rates.

Residents who live in the parishes of Ansford and Castle Cary may be interested to learn of the launch of a Community Governance Review (CGR).
Following petitions from local electors there’s a proposal to dissolve the 2 parishes and create 1 new parish, covering both areas.
The aim of the review is to ensure that parish governance arrangements reflect the identities and interests of the local community. And that they are effective, convenient, and promote community cohesion.

Somerset Council YouTube video: 28 Years Later in Cheddar Gorge
The third instalment of the hugely successful ‘28’ franchise, 28 Years Later is a terrifying return to the dystopian future first seen in 2002’s 28 Days Later.
Directed by Oscar-winner Danny Boyle and released in June 2025, it was one of the year’s summer blockbusters and while much of the shoot took place in Northumberland and on Lindisfarne (Holy Island), the climatic scenes were filmed in Somerset’s Cheddar Gorge.

British Empire Medals have been awarded to 6 “local heroes” at a ceremony held at The Newt in Somerset.
Individual medals were given to Paul Bunce, Nola French, Julia Knight, Julie Matthews, Dr Harvey Sampson and Keith Taylor for outstanding service to veterans, community, health and support in Somerset.
