Somerset Council has appointed Rigg Construction to help future-proof the world-famous Bridgwater Carnival – the biggest illuminated Carnival in Europe.
Work is expected to start soon on regenerating the Bristol Road site, where local Carnival Clubs build their spectacular carts that parade through the streets for the annual Guy Fawkes procession.
Channel 5’s Coastal Adventures TV crew filming BARB Search and Rescue team at Burnham-on-Sea
An iconic Somerset landmark and life-saving charity will feature on screen later this month as part of a new Channel 5 series celebrating the UK’s exciting coastline.
Burnham-on-Sea’s Low lighthouse and BARB Search and Rescue team are both featured in episode 8 of Coastal Adventures scheduled for broadcast at 8pm on Tuesday, 2 September.

Businesses across the Somerset are being invited to audition for supporting roles in film and TV.
Last year screen productions spent an estimated £4.2m in Somerset, and Screen Somerset – Somerset Council’s film office – encourages them to make use of local businesses wherever possible.
Businesses can increase their chances of getting work in this sector by registering on the Filming in England Supplier Directory.

Somerset Council has announced that there will be no recycling or rubbish collections taking place on Bank Holiday Monday, 25 August.
Collection days will change across Somerset following the bank holiday.
All collections will move back 1 day.

Somerset Council is migrating its system for council tax, benefits and business rates, with the legacy Mendip area being the first area to make the switch.
This important update will bring a new, improved customer portal and easier payment options, but there will be some temporary disruption to services while the changeover takes place.

2 Yeovil-based landlords have received Banning Orders for repeated prosecutions for breaches of housing standards, and repeated failures to comply with Council enforcement notices.
Banning Orders can be sought, under section 14 of the Housing and Planning Act 2016, in cases where landlords flout their legal obligations and rent out accommodation which is substandard. They are used only for the most serious offenders.

AI cameras are being trialled on a collision hotspot by Somerset Council and Avon and Somerset Police in a bid to curb dangerous driving.
The new state-of-art cameras will be stationed on the A361 Frome Bypass which has seen 6 fatalities in the last 5 years – 4 of these between 2023 and 2024.

The much-loved Minehead Bay Festival is back for its 4th year on Saturday 30 August 2025 from 12pm to 6pm, offering a free one-day celebration of music, art, food, and culture right on Minehead’s beautiful seafront.
This year’s solar-powered main stage, sponsored by Minehead Town Council, features live music from acts including Rory McLeod, Kid Hyena, LunaBarge, The Metatrons and The Breaks - all overlooking the beach.
