Somerset Council’s internal short break care provision for children with disabilities has been rated “Outstanding in all areas” following a 2-day Ofsted inspection between 25 and 26 February 2025.
The Elms, which provides essential short break care, was recognised for delivering services that consistently exceed the standards of good. Inspectors concluded that the home contributes to improved outcomes and positive experiences for children and young people who require help, protection, and care.
Somerset Council’s Chair, Leader and Chief Executive are joining thousands of charities and voluntary organisations recognising the contribution volunteers make across the UK at the launch of National Volunteers Week.
The Council has almost 1,400 volunteers with many supporting services that are important to the county’s residents of all ages from libraries and the environment, to children, young people and health.

Work on the B3227 between Wiveliscombe and Preston Bowyer is scheduled across 2 days from 11 to 13 June inclusive. It’s hoped the work will be completed in one day, weather and schedule dependent.

Somerset Council and its collections contractor, SUEZ recycling and recovery UK, are urging residents to do the right thing with their vapes once they have finished them.
The call follows an increase in vapes being thrown in bins and mixed in with recyclables at the kerbside.

Those planning to buy tickets or attend this summer’s events and concerts are being urged to stay vigilant to criminals, with the total combined loss increasing nearly 50% from 2023 to £9.7 million in 2024.
Action Fraud, the national fraud and cybercrime reporting service, has launched a new ticket fraud awareness campaign, warning people to be alert to fraudsters trying to catch out people planning for popular and sold-out events.
