Somerset Council and its collections contractor, SUEZ are among the first in the country to start collecting empty toothpaste tubes for recycling at the kerbside.
Recent changes to the materials used in the production of toothpaste tubes means that most can now be recycled in the Bright Blue Bag – so long as it says ‘recyclable’ on the tube.
Somerset’s Fixy project, which supports repair and reuse across the county, managed by Resource Futures, will continue thanks to the backing of Somerset Council and SUEZ.
Fixy, which began in May 2022, promotes reuse and community repair groups as well as being a roving collection point for smart tech donations.
 Somerset Council’s Public Health Nursing service has struck gold – winning a top award from UNICEF.
The UNICEF Baby Friendly Gold Award is the highest level of accreditation and celebrates excellent and continued practice in the support of infant feeding and parent-infant relationships.

Somerset Council and its highways contractor, Kier, ran a competition with local schools to name 2 new gritters which have just joined the fleet.
6 were short-listed and West Pennard’s ‘Spready Mercury’ was one of the 2 winning entries decided by public votes.

Somerset Council has welcomed plans to reform social care, but urged the Government to act faster.
It was announced on 3 January that the Government has commissioned an independent review which promises to identify critical issues facing adult social care, set to be published in 2028.

There’s still time to have your say on council services and priorities in Somerset Council’s annual budget consultation.
The consultation closes on 15 January with the results helping influence Councillors as they look to set a balanced budget in February 2025.

Nearly 70 participants – including representatives from the Civil Aviation Authority and several drone companies – joined the successful event at Somerset Council’s iAero Innovation Centre in Yeovil.
The meeting was part of Somerset Council and Devon County Council’s ‘Future Flight Innovation Zone’ (FFIZ) project, funded by £233k from the Government’s Local Growth Deal Fund.

Work to connect the multi-billion Agratas electric battery facility near Bridgwater to the power grid is well underway, a connection that is essential for the development which is expected to create up to 4,000 jobs and put Somerset at the centre of the UK’s green energy revolution.

National Highways is closing the A303 for resurfacing between Newtown and Stopgate Cross from 8pm to 6am on the following dates:
- Monday 13 to Friday 17 January
- Monday 20 to Friday 24 January
- Friday 24 to Monday 27 January
- Friday 31 January to Monday 3 February
