Contractor hits the ground running on Bridgwater’s Celebration Mile

Work on the ground kicks off in earnest on Bridgwater’s landmark Celebration Mile next week.

The flagship pedestrian and cycle friendly route will connect the railway station and the Northgate Docks which are also in line for regeneration. Both are funded by the Bridgwater Town Deal.

From 19 August a closure of Eastover is required for the safety of the public and workforce in order to get the first phase of the work done. The closure is between Broadway and Church Street. Access to Church Street will be maintained using two-way traffic lights via Eastover in an east direction.

Somerset Council’s Lead Member for Children, Families and Education has applauded the hard work of Somerset’s students as they collect their A-level results today (15 August) and GCSE results next week (22 August).

‘Walk for a Life’ Event Returns to Raise Awareness of Suicide Prevention

Somerset Council’s ‘Walk for a Life’ event, aimed at raising awareness of suicide prevention, returns for a third year on Saturday 7 September.

The walk starts at 10:30am at the Quaker Meeting House in Taunton and will pass through Taunton Town Centre, stopping in Vivary Park at the “Afterlife” bench to lay flowers to commemorate loved ones who have died by suicide.

Pedal powered reuse initiative keeps bikes on the road

A new initiative between Somerset Council, SUEZ and On Your Bike, means that bikes collected via the council’s bulky collection service will now be donated to On Your Bike, and head back onto the road. Recycling is great but buying less or second-hand, reusing and repairing is always better for the environment. Even if a bike is no longer roadworthy, the team at On Your Bike, will happily refurbish it or use it for parts.

Businesses urged to check proof of age

Businesses are being warned that they are putting their livelihoods at risk by not asking for identification when selling age-restricted goods such as vapes, tobacco and alcohol. It follows the prosecution of a shopkeeper from Bridgwater who has been ordered to pay more than £3500 after being caught selling vapes to a 15-year-old girl.
