Donation of a bleed control kit cabinet at the Brasshouse Community Centre in Smethwick
Brasshouse Community Centre in Smethwick recently took delivery of a bleed control kit cabinet that is now available for the local community to use. The bleed control kit cabinet was donated by Bishop Dr Desmond Jaddoo MBE as part of Yes2Life Project along with John Duthart of Fire & Evacuation Services Ltd.
John stated: "The benefit of having a bleed control kit cabinet on the fence outside of the centre is that even when the centre is closed people in the local community can still access the bleed control kit if they ever came across someone that had encountered catastrophic blood loss incident."
Bishop Desmond said: "A kit is no good without training and also it is important for ease of access in order to save a life. I am pleased that we have provided this valuable asset to Brasshouse Community Centre."
|
During March 2025 Brasshouse Community Centre held a bleed control kit training session. Over 20 people from the local community attended this free training opportunity and from this training the idea of having a bleed control kit cabinet was born.
Jennifer Harrison BEM, Chief Executive Officer of Brasshouse Community Centre, said: "The addition of the bleed control kit cabinet along with our existing defibrillator makes a great statement to our community that there are two major pieces of lifesaving equipment available if it was ever needed."

Hate crime has no place in Sandwell
Sandwell Council and our partners take a zero-tolerance approach to hate crime. No one should ever be targeted because of their race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability. Hate crime will always be treated as a serious offence and perpetrators will be held to account.
Reported hate crime is prosecuted
A 38-year-old man from Sandwell has received a suspended sentence for a racially aggravated offence under the Public Order Act.
On 21 April 2024, the defendant was arrested for being drunk and disorderly. While in police custody, he became racially abusive towards a police officer. He was subsequently charged with a racially aggravated public order offence, to which he pleaded guilty.
On 8 July 2025, the defendant was sentenced to an 18-week suspended prison sentence, uplifted from 15 weeks to reflect the hate crime element. He was also ordered to pay £50 in compensation to the complainant.

Back to school
Heading to secondary school is an exciting but busy time, and it’s essential to talk to your child about staying safe. Here’s some advice from West Midlands Police:
- Walk or drive the route with your child and point out safe places. Encourage them to use a buddy system and avoid shortcuts through isolated areas. If they use public transport, remind them to stay in well-lit areas and be aware of their surroundings.
- It’s crucial your child knows what to do in an emergency. Remind them never to talk to or accept rides from strangers, and ensure they have your contact information and that of another trusted adult.
- Label personal items and advise your child not to take valuables or large amounts of money to school.
- Consider using location-sharing apps on yours and your child’s phones and enable two-factor authentication to make it harder for others to access them. Always keep a record of your child’s phone’s IMEI number in case it’s lost or stolen.
- Remind your child not to share their school routine or location on social media. Talk to them about cyberbullying and encourage them to report any harassment.
