Safer Streets work in West Bromwich

Sandwell Council's Community Safety Team has worked closely with partners to help prevent violence against women and girls and promote safety in public spaces as part of the Safer Streets project.

Work has included one-to-one mentoring, theatre productions and group work in schools. 'Bystander' training was provided at Sandwell College and young people have written and produced a music video, all aimed at tackling sexualised behaviours and misogyny.

More than 180 practitioners from 80 different organisations received training around sexual assault and abuse at a special event at Sandwell College.

A Safe Spaces scheme has launched in West Bromwich town centre. Look out for shops and buildings with the 'We are a safe space' sticker displayed. These are places you can wait indoors for support if you ever feel unsafe and while you wait for a family member, friend or the police to arrive.

Help prevent abuse, exploitation and trafficking

If you suspect that you, or people you know, are being exploited, visit the It's A Penalty Anti-Trafficking website to know the signs to look for and how to make a report. You can also call the 24/7 UK Modern Slavery and Exploitation Helpline free on 08000 121 700.

A combination of signs may help to identify human trafficking and exploitation. A person may be easily agitated, startled or afraid. They may be unsure of where they are or lack official ID. They may be unable to explain injuries or possessions, look unkempt or malnourished or have unexplained hotel use.

Other signs include being accompanied by a suspicious companion, children can be dressed up to look older than they are, and people can be secretive about what they are meeting, talking to or what they're doing online.

Help end modern slavery at hand car washes

There are thousands of hand car washes across the UK. While many of these are legitimate businesses, some are run by unscrupulous people determined to exploit their workers to make as much money as possible. In these instances, these workers may be victims of modern slavery.

The Clewer Initiative’s Safe Car Wash App enables anyone who has contact with hand car washes to identify and report slavery. Look out for workers living on site, no PPE, young workers, prices that are too cheap and intimidating management.

Download the Safe Car Wash App and help end modern slavery at hand car washes.
