Sandwell Council House, flag lowered to half mast

The Deputy Leader of the Council, Councillor Maria Crompton, said: "Along with the Mayor, on behalf of the citizens of Sandwell, I have written a letter of condolence to The Queen, offering our deepest sympathies and to convey the sadness that is being felt.

“Our thoughts are with Her Majesty and the Royal Family at this time.”

An online book of condolence is available for the people of Sandwell to sign. Messages of condolence will be gathered and sent to Her Majesty the Queen and the Royal family at a later date.

Queen visiting Oak House 1977

The Duke of Edinburgh most recently visited Sandwell in 2010 when he officially opened the new RSA Academy school in Tipton.

He also opened the new Summerhill Primary School in Tipton in 2008.

The Duke visited Oak House in West Bromwich in 1977 with the Queen as part of her Silver Jubilee celebrations. In 1971 he also opened Tipton Sports Union Trust's headquarters in Gospel Oak Road.
