Hounslow Council completes first phase of borough-wide building decarbonisation scheme
Salix Finance and partners from Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) were given the opportunity this week to visit four council buildings within the London Borough of Hounslow.
Low carbon-energy efficiency sources installed in Hounslow’s schools and public buildings will reduce carbon emissions by more than 3,000 tonnes each year and save millions of kilowatts hours (kWh) of gas and electricity.
Hounslow Council received £7.6 million grant through the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme to implement decarbonisation measures across 33 of its schools.

Isleworth Leisure Centre and Library installed six air source heat pumps, 130 solar panels, battery storage and 567 LED lights. This is saving the building 50 per cent of carbon annually, the equivalent of 185 cars off the road! If you go and visit, you’ll find the air source heat pumps in the car park. The fans of the air source heat pump may look big, but they are super quiet and doing an important job! |

The Heathland School is one of the largest comprehensive secondary and further education schools in the borough of Hounslow. The sheer size of the school brought its own challenges to greening its heating. To overcome this the school has installed three specialised air source heat pumps which can deliver temperatures of 80 degrees centigrade, allowing it to link seamlessly into the existing infrastructure of the building.
Solar panels and battery storage have been installed into the roof, offsetting the air source heat pumps making it carbon neutral, and LEDs have been installed throughout the school. The school is making a 50 per cent carbon saving annually as a result!

The Rosary Primary School is much smaller in size but making a big impact on Climate Action, nonetheless. This school has also implemented solar panels, battery storage LED and an air source heat pump. It was a delight to be greeted by 5 enthusiastic pupils who were eager to talk about the green projects taking place at their school. In total the school are saving 43 per cent of carbon a year and on sunny days the school can now fully operate on green energy! |

Brentford Fountain Leisure Centre, is making big waves in greening its heating and electricity. If you look closely at the slanting roof, you’ll find newly fitted solar panels! As well as installing solar PV, battery storage, 6 air source heat pumps and 692 LED lights have been fitted. This is turning the tide from the leisure centre running 100 per cent on gas and carbon-based electricity, to 60 per cent green energy. |
