Carbon Reduction Quick Wins – cut costs, cut CO2 pollution

If you're business is in one of the following sectors;  Food Manufacturing, General Manufacturing/ Engineering, Office based, Retail, Hospitality or Construction - you can benefit from one or more carbon reduction quick wins from the below list:-

Lighting
• Upgrade to LED lighting - up to 80% saving on electricity costs.
• Integrate occupancy (motion sensors) & daylight controls (off in good natural light)

Space Heating
• Offices: heat to 19°C cool to 24°C each 1deg C is >10% increase in heating costs
• Install thermostatic radiator valves (TRV’s)
• Match heating times to occupancy; consider optimal start/stop (time to warm the space) & compensator controls that match heating on/off times to external temp
• Insulate your building – loft, cavity wall, solid wall, flat roof, glazing.
• Upgrading heating? Consider air source heat pumps 80% cut in CO2 (ditch gas!)

Refrigeration/Cooling
• Maintain design temperatures; typically 0 to 4°C for cool rooms, and -18°C to -20°C for freezer rooms – run at the highest temperature for your product; www.food.gov.uk
• If a system is more than 10 years old replace for 30% more efficiency
• Consider heat recovery if site also has hot water requirement.
• Consider ‘free cooling’ and compressor upgrades

Motor Driven Processes
• High-efficiency motors can cost up to 40% more than older, standard-efficiency motors, but the payback period can be less than 2 years from energy saved.
• If there is a 30% or more range in process output requirements matching the load with a variable speed drive (VSD) can reduce energy use significantly

Process/Compressed Air
• Eliminate unnecessary compressed air usage – eg Using low-pressure blowers or for cleaning brushes and vacuum systems are often much cheaper alternatives
• Reduce air pressure scope for zoning? / Check frequently for leaks

Fleet/ Travel

• Install Telematics on vehicles, green alternatives for deliveries, encourage walk, cycle & public transport for staff, business trips; train not plane for European travel.

Garon Park Carbon Offset Scheme

Garon Park Community Interest Company (CIC) operates on a 32 acre site on the Southend Rochford border with the aim of improving the health and wellbeing of local people through the development of world class facilities within an ecologically diverse and thriving environment.

We recognise the importance of the environment to people’s wellbeing, so this is a cornerstone of our work. Our target is to re-wild 30% of the site and we have currently reached 20% through careful management and the planting of over 10,000 trees and shrubs.

We are looking for more businesses who would like to get involved in carbon reduction and wellbeing. Involvement can take many forms from volunteering time, expertise and/or resources, planting days, raising money for our charity, donations and sponsorship, which would be tailored to your organisation.

We can provide information and presentations on the impact of your investments which are also important evidence of your Social Value. If you would like to find out more please contact Caroline Reynolds on enquiries@garonparkcic.com or call  01702 965959. You can also visit their website.
