January 2026
Before we dash off into January - where does the time go - let's hit pause and rewind to Christmas 2025 for a jolly little festive lookback as we wave it off with a fond smile.
Christmas 2025 Lookback
Cortonwood Comeback Centre
The Cortonwood Comeback Centre warmly welcomed everyone for a beautiful and uplifting Christmas Eve Carol Service led by Reverend Charles Burton, attended by 40 people from across the community. The evening brought people together through a charming Christmas Tale performed by the children of Brampton, a reflective Tree of Remembrance and the chance to connect and share seasonal greetings over mulled wine, cake and mince pies.
And above you can see Hoober Ward Councillor Lelliott - the beating heart of the Cortonwood Comeback Centre - flinging the Centre's doors wide open on Christmas Day to create something truly special for those facing Christmas alone. Brimming with delicious food, warmth, laughter and companionship, topped off with a gift for everyone.
Now that's what community is all about!
 Harley Christmas Concert
And here's Hoober Ward Councillor Williams, who joined Harley's First Lady, Cynthia Shaw, for the Harley Mission Rooms Christmas Concert and what an unforgettable celebration it was! Bursting with joyful carols, the season's best music and a dazzling performance by the renowned Chapeltown Silver Prize Band, it brought festive magic right to the heart of the community.
Farewell Christmas 2025 and don't forget, only 340 sleeps until Christmas 2026!

Bierlow Park Walkabout - Brampton
Hoober Ward Councillors Rajmund Brent and John Williams, joined colleagues and partners from Council Green Spaces and Housing, for a walkabout on Bierlow Park in relation to reports and incidents of off road bikes in this area. Our partners at South Yorkshire Police were also part of the working party.
Work will soon begin on reducing the number of entry and exit points to the park along with signage which will include information on off-road vehicles laws. Additionally, a CCTV camera has now been installed to monitor the park and nearby. This will support Officers from South Yorkshire Police to identify illegal vehicles, seize them and apprehend their drivers and riders.

All parties are committed to stamping this out and making Brampton a place that all residents love and take pride in.
This aligns with Hoober Ward Priority to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour.
Motorbikes, Quads & Off Road Vehicles
Don't suffer in silence - motorbikes, quads and off road vehicles are not just a nuisance, they can cause anti-social crime, so make sure you report them to South Yorkshire Police. If it's an emergency, always call 999, for a non-emergency use 101 or go online.
Our Places Fund Consultation - Wentworth War Memorial
The Council has reaffirmed its commitment to keep every neighbourhood thriving by approving major investment in local areas as part of the Our Places Fund.
Borough-wide consultation with residents in October and November 2024 identified key priorities for improvement. This included enhancing the surroundings of cenotaphs and memorials and upgrading public spaces to make them more accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
Our Places Fund Phase Two improvements will therefore focus on the following areas:
- Honouring Rotherham’s history and heritage, areas around cenotaphs, memorials and monuments in Dinnington, Greasbrough, Thrybergh, Treeton and Wentworth will be improved
- Swallownest - Public space upgrades on Gray Avenue (off Mason Avenue)
- Rawmarsh and Parkgate - Various locations across High Street and Haugh Road in Rawmarsh and Broad Street in Parkgate will benefit from public space improvements.
Have your say
An in-person consultation event to gather feedback on proposals to improve the public space around Wentworth’s War Memorial (on the corner of Main Street and Hague Lane), will take place on Thursday 22 January, from 3pm to 6pm, at Wentworth Mechanics Institute on Main Street.
Alternatively, complete the online consultation here: Consultations – Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council
The online consultation will close at 12pm on Thursday 12 February 2026.
If you would like to request a paper version of the survey, please call 01709 254444 or email info@rotherham.gov.uk

Hoober Ward... Love Where You Live
Calling all Hoober residents! Ward Councillors Brent, Lelliott and Williams, would like to see what you think makes Hoober Ward so special.
So, whilst you're out and about, should you spot a lovely sunset, birds singing, dew on the grass or a beautiful flower, get your camera out and snap away. You can send your pictures to us for a chance to appear in the monthly ward e‑bulletin.
Please email: neighbourhoods@rotherham.gov.uk and title your message 'Hoober Ward, Love Where You Live', telling us where your photo was taken and why it means so much to you.
This months shot is from a Hoober resident who likes their local history and you can't get more local than this - Hoober Stand.
Seen nestled within the trees, Hoober Stand was designed by architect, Henry Flitcroft for Thomas Watson-Wentworth when he was elevated to the 1st Marquess of Rockingham after fighting for the British Government against the 1745 Jacobite rising.
Construction lasted from 1746 to 1748 at a cost £3,000!

Have Your Say on Policing Priorities & Precept
South Yorkshire’s Mayor Oliver Coppard has outlined his ambition for more visible policing on our streets and to reduce neighbourhood crime and tackle anti-social behaviour through more investment in policing.
The Mayor is inviting residents to share their views on his proposals by indicating if they are willing to pay a little more towards the policing element of their council tax bill to enable that investment to be made, in order to keep South Yorkshire communities safe.
Local police and fire services are funded through a mix of government grants (around three quarters of the total budget) and the remainder is raised through the council tax precept. In South Yorkshire, the policing precept makes up about 11% of a typical council tax bill.
Extra funding for policing means better policing: safer neighbourhoods, more visible policing, quicker response times and for officers to be equipped with the modern tools they need to do their job.
The proposal is to increase the council tax precept by £15 per year (29 pence per week) for on a Band D property. Which equates to a £10 increase (19 pence per week) for a Band A property.
It’s important that you have your say and help to shape the future of policing. The responses you provide will be used to inform the proposals for the policing budget for the coming year.
The survey can be taken via this link or by scanning the QR code above.
The survey will close at midday on Thursday 22 January 2026.

Keeping Our Community Safe: What You Need to Know About Nitrous Oxide
We all want our neighbourhoods to be safe, clean, and welcoming. One issue we’re tackling together is the misuse of nitrous oxide – sometimes called 'laughing gas.' Whilst it has important medical and industrial uses, using it to get high is both illegal and harmful. Here’s what you need to know and how you can help.
The Law
- It’s illegal to possess nitrous oxide if you intend to inhale it for a high
- Supplying, producing, importing, or exporting nitrous oxide for recreational use is also against the law.
Why It Matters
Misusing nitrous oxide can cause:
- Nerve damage
- Loss of consciousness
- In extreme cases, death
It’s also linked to antisocial behaviour, littering, and drug-driving incidents – all of which affect our community.
Penalties
If caught with nitrous oxide for recreational use, you could face:
- An unlimited fine
- A community punishment
- A caution on your criminal record
- Up to 2 years in prison for repeat offences
Supplying or producing nitrous oxide for recreational use can lead to up to 14 years in prison, an unlimited fine, or both.
What Can You Do?
Need Support?
If you or someone you know is struggling with substance use, help is available. Visit Drug and Alcohol Support in Rotherham (ROADS) for advice and assistance.
Together, we can keep Rotherham safe, clean, and informed.
