Councillors join residents for Remembrance Day services
This November, the National Day of Remembrance marked a significant year following the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War earlier this year.
Services took place throughout the ward at the Parish Councils, churches and crematorium.
Councillors joined members of the community to remember those that lost their lives in conflicts past and present, paying tribute on a poignant day.
Remembrance Day takes place annually on 11 November, with a minute’s silence observed at 11am, signifying armistice at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month.
For more information on Remembrance Day and this year’s 80th anniversaries can be found at Royal British Legion's website.

Tenants take up free fitness classes in centres
Thanks to ward housing funding, Council tenants can now take advantage of free indoor exercise classes at Wootton Court and Leverton Way (Dorothy Taylor) neighbourhood centres.
Delivered by a trained instructor, the classes offer gentle and chair-based exercise including stretching, cardio, resistance and relaxation, with classes tailored around those who attend.
Classes are every Thursday and Friday from 1pm to 2pm and will run until the end of March 2026. New starters will be assessed to understand their health and what their exercise and fitness goals are. Classes are also open to non-tenants living in the ward at a cost of 56p per session.
- Thursdays 1pm to 2pm Leverton Way, Dalton S65 4HP
- Fridays 1pm to 2pm Wootton Court, Thrybergh S65 4JD.

Celebrating the best of our community
Throughout the year we have shone a light on the inspirational work of volunteers in the ward, who give their time and dedication to activities and causes in the community.
This month we want to recognise the work of East Herringthorpe resident, Doug Baxter, who is known affectionately locally as ‘the poppy man’.
A former reservist and postman in the army, Doug volunteers each year to support the Royal British Legion (RBL). He delivers boxes of poppies to local businesses and fundraises on the RBL stand in Asda at Dalton, which this year raised £9,884 for the charity.
Doug is also a standard bearer at RBL events, participates in community litter picks and supports the MCVC at Silverwood Miners Welfare. We are told he is known for his bad dad jokes, but we think we can let him off given all the amazing work he does.
One local business owner who supports the Poppy Appeal said: "We look forward to Doug dropping off and picking up the poppy boxes. He leaves us in stitches and motivates us to help the appeal.”
It is volunteers like Doug who contribute so much to the local community and highlight the difference volunteering can make. Well done Doug, you are a true Community Champion.
The Royal British Legion are currently looking for new volunteers to help with next year’s appeal. Volunteering is flexible and you can donate as little or as much time as you want. For anyone interested, you can contact Cheryl Jones, Rotherham East poppy appeal co-ordinator on 07580041424.
Get vaccinated, get protected
As we head into winter, it's the time of year where we spend more time indoors and viruses spread more easily. Vaccinations are an important and effective way of protecting you, your family and the community against the spread of illness.
The NHS is encouraging everyone who is eligible to book their free vaccinations against flu and COVID-19, particularly those most at risk of serious illness.
Healthwatch Rotherham provides information and advice and information on eligibility and vaccination services local to you. If you would like to find out how to get vaccinated and if you are eligible for free vaccinations, you can visit Healthwatch Rotherham.

Community Leadership Funding making a difference
Thanks to Community Leadership Funding, Councillors Bennett-Sylvester and Ryalls have supported a number of community projects and activities that support ward priorities.
Highlights from this years projects have included activities for children with the Titans Community Trust during the summer holidays, venue hire for South Yorkshire Performance Academy and The Skate Academy, and support for befriending and a carers choir.
Being able to support groups that offer activities that offer opportunities and enhance the health and wellbeing of residents is a privilege, and helps contribute to achieving ward plans.
If you have an idea for a project or activity that would benefit your community group or make a difference locally, you can speak to your ward councillors or contact Neighbourhoods at neighbourhoods@rotherham.gov.uk. New Community Leadership Funding will be open from April 2026.
