Community Speed Watch
Ward Councillors Brent and Williams, alongside dedicated partners from South Yorkshire Police and the Neighbourhoods Team, hit the streets of Harley for a proactive Community Speed Watch - putting the newly launched 20mph Road Safety Scheme through its paces and showing real commitment to keeping our roads safer for everyone.
Determined to keep Hoober Ward a safe and welcoming place for everyone, Ward Members grabbed the speed camera and took action - raising awareness of road safety with energy and purpose. Their hands-on approach shows just how serious they are about protecting both residents and visitors.
This aligns with Hoober Ward Priority:
Improving Road Safety
- Work with partners to address local concerns around road safety improvements
- Work with communities to help alleviate parking problems, speeding and improve traffic flow
Former Rotherham Mayor and Consort (Councillors Sheila Cowen and Rajmund Brunt, Wath and Hoober Wards respectively), teamed up for a heartwarming visit in support of the newly launched Friday Lunch Club at Harley Mission Rooms and what a treat they were in for!
On the menu: tender pork, crispy roast potatoes, fresh vegetables and a golden Yorkshire pudding, followed by a refreshing fruit and ice cream dessert. All served with a choice of tea or coffee and all for just £6 per person - now that’s unbeatable value!
Thanks to the collaboration of Cynthia Shaw, Harley Mission Rooms Trustee and The Community Payback Scheme, everyone enjoyed an afternoon filled with delicious food, warm company and lively conversation - proof that community spirit is alive and well at Harley.
If you'd like to tickle your taste buds at the weekly Friday Lunch Club and enjoy meals prepared by qualified chefs with a seven-week rotating menu, don't hesitate.
Booking is essential via Cynthia on 01226 743767, before 6pm each Wednesday.

Motorbikes, Quads & Off Road Vehicles
Don't suffer in silence - motorbikes, quads and off road vehicles are not just a nuisance, they can help cause anti-social crime, so make sure you report them to South Yorkshire Police. If it's an emergency, always call 999, for a non-emergency use 101 or go online.
Community Speed Watch
Community Speed Watch groups are co-ordinated by South Yorkshire Police but managed and run by unpaid volunteers in the community, allowing residents to play a part in making their communities safer while educating drivers.
If you are interested in starting a scheme in your area, register your interest by emailing csw@southyorkshire.police.uk.

Love Where You Live - help keep our streets clean
A clean neighbourhood reflects pride, safety, and community spirit. That’s why keeping our streets tidy is a top priority.
From litter picking to reporting fly tipping, every small action counts. Together, we can create a welcoming, safe, and cared-for space we’re proud to call home.
How to get involved:
Love Where You Live scheme by Rotherham Council is a community initiative aimed at encouraging residents to take an active role in maintaining and improving their local environment.
For more information or to get involved, visit Rotherham Council's Love Where You Live web page or email: lovewhereyoulive@rotherham.gov.uk
Unwanted waste and larger household items. You can take unwanted waste to one of Rotherham’s Household Waste Recycling Centres or if you need help with larger household items, such as furniture, electrical appliances, baths, window frames and doors, use Bulky Waste Collections. See the website for more information.
Tell us about a litter problem. Let us know about an area in Rotherham that needs litter removing or tell us about an ongoing litter problem. If you know the person who dropped litter you can report them to us.
If you need to report drug litter, please telephone 01709 336003 and our Customer Services team will be able to help.
Report a litter problem.
Report fly tipping.
Clean streets help control pests. Rats, cockroaches, and flies thrive in areas with food waste, standing water, and clutter. By keeping streets clean, we remove their sources of food and shelter, making it harder for them to survive and breed.
Using poison only treats the symptoms and can harm local wildlife like hedgehogs - already at risk - and pets such as cats and dogs. Effective pest control starts with prevention: managing waste, removing stagnant water, and keeping public spaces tidy.
Let’s protect our environment and community. Contact Pest Control Support.
Dog Fouling. You must pick up after your dog or risk a £1000 fine. Read more about dog fouling and how to report it.
Disposal of Sharps and Medical Waste:
You may be eligible for a clinical waste collection if you have:
- Medical waste that needs collecting such as: needles, syringes, dressings, pads or swabs. To request a clinical waste collection a referral will need to be made by your GP.
To request a collection of sharps and medical waste from a residential property, use this link.
If sharps or other medical waste are found on the highway or public land:
Drug litter found within domestic gardens or on private land, should be reported to and dealt with by the occupier or the landowner.
The Council can take action if it does pose a health risk or nuisance.
Telephone: 01709 336003
Help us to keep Hoober Ward clean and safe.
Community Leadership Fund
Councillors Brent, Lelliott and Williams, would like to welcome voluntary and community groups from across Hoober Ward to apply for their Community Leadership Fund.
The Fund offers small grants to boost projects and events across the Ward that support at least one of the Ward’s Priorities. Hoober Ward Priorities can be found on the Ward's webpage here. Funding to support both revenue and capital projects will be considered.
If you are part of a community group, voluntary organisation or charity and would like to find out more or request an application form, please contact your Neighbourhood Co-ordinator, Tracey, by email: tracey.white@rotherham.gov.uk.
Applications are considered on a rolling basis, however, please bear in mind that the Community Leadership Fund is limited.

Health and Wellbeing
September has played host to raising awareness and taking the stigma out of two significant conditions:
Alzheimer’s / Dementia
It is estimated that the number of people living with dementia in the UK is around 850,000 to 1 million, with many not even receiving a formal diagnosis.
World Alzheimer’s month spanned the whole of September with 21 September being World Alzheimer’s Day focussing on raising awareness, promoting early diagnosis, getting the support you need and taking the stigma out of dementia.
So whether you want to know about activities, support, you’re a carer or simply want to find out more, help is out there:

Falls Prevention
September 2025 hosted Falls Prevention Awareness Week, to highlight that falls are not an inevitable part of getting older and are preventable.
Falls are a major issue for the elderly or those who have mobility problems and can cause a severe impact on someone’s life as figures show that around one in three over 65's and one in two people over 80 years old experience at least one fall a year.
But it’s not all doom and gloom as staying active can improve strength and balance, making your home safer and removing hazards lessens risks and getting regular medical checks for sight, hearing and your medications are all positive steps.
For more information about falls including what to do if you should fall, visit:
Age UK
NHS UK
and whether it’s exercise, walking, gardening or just getting out and about, be sure to look out for activities at your local community centre:

Hoober Ward... Love Where You Live
Calling all Hoober residents! Ward Councillors Brent, Lelliott and Williams, would like to see what you think makes Hoober Ward so special.
So, whilst you're out and about, should you spot a lovely sunset, birds singing, dew on the grass or a beautiful flower, get your camera out and snap away. You can send your pictures to us for a chance to appear in the monthly ward e‑bulletin.
Please email: neighbourhoods@rotherham.gov.uk and title your message 'Hoober Ward, Love Where You Live', telling us where your photo was taken and why it means so much to you.
This month's submission is from a Brampton resident who took this picture outside Brampton Bierlow Parish Hall earlier this year. Whilst Summer has now passed and we're heading into Autumn, she said that the front of the Parish Hall looked beautiful with all the flowers and even now, the picture still puts a smile on her face.
Blooming marvellous!
