'Thank You' Plaque for Mark Crook
The community came out in force to remember and celebrate, with the unveiling of a blue plaque, to remember Mark Crook and his contribution to football in his native South Yorkshire.
Mark played outside right for Wolverhampton Wanderers and ran Brampton Welfare (latterly Wath Wanderers) and was widely acknowledged as an outstanding scout for Wolves. His skill and determination gave many youngsters the opportunity to play professional football and a shot at greatness that they would likely never have had.
In fact, the great Stan Cullis in his autobiography stated "Wath is probably the first football club ever formed for the primary purpose of finding outstanding youngsters to pass on to a parent organisation and it is almost worth its weight in gold."
The event, which took place on Friday, 30 May 2025, started at Brampton Bierlow Parish Hall ahead of the unveiling of the plaque at Cortonwood Miners Welfare, a place dear to Mark's heart.
Hoober Ward Councillors Brent and Williams were delighted to be able to join Parish Councillors, ex-Wolves players, dignitaries and even Mark's granddaughter for a very emotionally-charged ceremony.
The Blue Plaque was joint funded by Hoober Ward Councillors Brent, Lelliott and Williams from their Capital Budget and Brampton Bierlow Parish Council.
This aligns with Hoober Ward Priority 4: Support opportunities for bringing people together, enhancing community spirit, and support the communities and its groups to thrive.
New Danger Deep Water Sign
Hoober Ward Councillor, John Williams, has been checking out the new warning sign which has been erected at Cortonwood Duck Pond on the Meadowgate and Swangate Estate, at Brampton Bierlow. This sign was installed after Councillor Williams reported residents concerns around the importance of keeping people, wildlife and the environment safe.
Councillor Williams would like to say thank you to landowners St. Paul's for their quick response on replacing the previous missing and damaged sign.
This aligns with Hoober Ward Priority 2: Addressing environmental issues and making good use of green spaces/community assets for everyone.
Community Leadership Fund
Councillors Brent, Lelliott and Williams, would like to welcome voluntary and community groups from across Hoober Ward to apply for their Community Leadership Fund.
The Fund offers small grants to boost projects and events across the Ward that support at least one of the Ward’s Priorities. Hoober Ward Priorities can be found on the Ward's webpage here. Funding to support both revenue and capital projects will be considered.
If you are part of a community group, voluntary organisation or charity and would like to find out more or request an application form, please contact your Neighbourhood Co-ordinator, Tracey, by email: tracey.white@rotherham.gov.uk.
Applications are considered on a rolling basis, however, please bear in mind that the Community Leadership Fund is limited.

Have Your Say on Warmer Greener Homes
Are you renting privately in Rotherham? Researchers from Sheffield Hallam University’s Centre for Regional Economic and Social Research (CRESR) would like to hear from you.
As part of their Let Zero study, the team is exploring how private rented homes can be made warmer, greener, and more energy efficient. The research will support the development of a new ‘One-Stop-Shop’ where tenants and landlords across South Yorkshire can get advice on tackling issues such as cold, damp, and mould, and learn how to improve energy efficiency.
The team is inviting tenants to share their views on possible improvements to their homes, especially changes that could help reduce carbon emissions and cut energy bills.
Taking part is easy. You can choose between a telephone or video interview, lasting no more than 30 minutes. You will receive a £20 Love2Shop voucher as a thank you for your time. All responses will be treated confidentially and you will remain anonymous in the research.
If you would like to get involved or find out more, please contact the Sheffield Hallam University research team at: LetZero@shu.ac.uk
