Cllrs Monk and Read visited Pottery Ponds to receive an update on the work to restore the Waterloo Kiln, sited here since 1815.
Specialist contractors are currently working meticulously to restore the structure, whilst preserving the story of this magnificent part of our heritage. The restoration is part of a substantial investment in the Swinton landmark, including a grant of over £77,000 from Historic England.
This fantastic structure was part of the internationally renowned Rockingham Pottery, with original pieces available to view in Rotherham including at the Clifton Park Museum.
On Monday 9 September, Councillor Monk had the honour of attending the Summer Reading Challenge presentation at Swinton Library, where she proudly awarded medals to the young readers who completed the challenge.
The event was a fantastic celebration of the children’s hard work and dedication to reading throughout the summer.
The Summer Reading Challenge is a free programme aimed at encouraging children aged 4 to 11 to discover the joy of reading for pleasure during the summer holidays.
Participants are tasked with reading six or more library books, making it a fun and engaging way to continue learning and exploring through books while school is out.
Councillor Monk commended the children for their commitment and enthusiasm in taking on the challenge, and the event was a testament to the power of reading to inspire young minds. The presentation brought the community together to celebrate literacy, learning, and the joy of getting lost in a good book.
Congratulations to all the young participants on their impressive achievement, and a big thank you to Swinton Library for hosting such a valuable initiative!

Last Friday, St Thomas’s School in Kilnhurst hosted a fun-filled event to remember—the much-anticipated Colour Dash Obstacle Course.
This exciting day was organised by the school’s dedicated PTA group, with special assistance from Councillor Harper. The event was all about raising funds to rejuvenate the school’s playground, and what a success it turned out to be!
Children at the school participated in the Colour Dash, navigating a series of challenging and entertaining obstacles. To add to the excitement, both teachers and students tossed bright powder paint as the children raced through the course, creating a kaleidoscope of colours and laughter across the playground.
The event wasn’t just a day of fun and laughter; it was a massive success in terms of fundraising.
The school managed to raise an impressive total of £1,600, which will go directly towards repainting the playground, ensuring the children have a vibrant and refreshed space to play in.
