Click the image to see Sandy's story and her on patrol in Maltby
Rotherham Council school crossing patrol, Sandy Cox, who works at Maltby Lilly Hall Academy, is one of the stars of a new campaign by public sector union, Unison to highlight the work of unsung heroes working for local Councils.
Sandy works at one of 60 school crossing patrol sites in the borough and combines her road safety duties with her second job as a lunchtime supervisor.
As part of the campaign, some amazing life-like action figures were produced of Sandy and the other council workers taking part – all boxed up in packaging designed by renowned Marvel Comics artist, Will Sliney.
Sandy said, “I don’t think people fully realise all the valuable work councils do. It’s like when you see swans gliding along but underneath there’s furious paddling going on to keep things moving. Workers like me love what we do, and I’m so proud to make an important contribution to the community.”
Click to watch the Mayor talk about the honour he feels and what he'd like to achieve in office.
The Mayor of Rotherham, Councillor Robert Taylor is “absolutely honoured and humbled” to serve as your Mayor. The Mayor has spent his entire adult life living in Rotherham, serving as a firefighter for South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue for more than 30 years.
During his year in office, the Mayor will raise vital funds for a number of local charities, including the Rotherham Hospital and Community Charity which has great personal significance, as it is where both the Mayor and his wife Tracy underwent life-saving cancer treatment in recent years.
