Operation Slowdown
Councillor Carole Foster and PCSO Paul Newman carried out a speed check survey on Fenton Road on Friday 3 March along with Neighbourhood Coordinator Nic Antcliff.
In total, the speeds of 150 vehicles were checked and none were recorded over the speed limit of 50mph.
Further speed checks will be carried out across the ward in the coming months.
If you are a resident and would like to attend one of these checks, please contact Neighbourhood Coordinator Nic Antcliff for more information.
The Great British Spring Clean is the nation’s biggest mass-action environmental campaign. Back for its eighth year, it will take place from 17 March to 2 April, and will see hundreds of #LitterHeroes pick litter within their local communities.
The campaign also includes the Great Big School Clean, giving schools and pupils the opportunity to get involved. Organised by Keep Britain Tidy, the campaign asks people to pledge their commitment to pick bags of litter in their local area.
Keppel ward councillors along with the S61 Litter Picking Group carried out a litter pick on Sunday 26th March. The group met at 10am at Oaks Lane Shops in Kimberworth Park.
We know litter and rubbish is an ongoing concern for some residents in the ward. The work that was carried out supports the Keppel Ward priority around improving the appearance of the environment.
The Council has a range of equipment to support activities and equipment can be loaned.
If you are interested or would like more information, you can email lovewhereyoulive@rotherham.gov.uk, or you can complete a form on the Council website.
Litter picks tend to last around two hours and are a great way of meeting new people and giving back to your community.
Warm packs are being distributed
Keppel Ward councillors have used their local budget to pay for warm packs.
The warm packs will be distributed to residents in Kimberworth Park and Thorpe Hesley who may be struggling to heat their homes due to rising costs.
Packs include a fleece blanket, gloves, socks, hat, hot water bottle and a thermal mug.
Volunteers at St John's Church are pictured with Councillor Tony Browne and Reverend Geraldine.
Councillor Carole Foster and Nic Antcliff, Neighbourhood Coordinator were invited to Redscope School to help with tree planting on Friday 17th March.
With the help of the children and the local community, the school are hoping to improve the respect and curiosity for nature and want to create a tiny forest within the grounds of Redscope Primary School.
Children from each year group (ages 2 to 11) planted over 350 small trees in the school grounds with the help of school staff, Councillor Foster, the Neighbourhoods team, Trees and Woodland team, staff from Liberty Steel and Rotherham United.
The trees were donated by the Woodland Trust and Endeavour Sheffield.
The Mayor of Rotherham attended who spoke with staff to find out more about their future plans. The Mayor planted an oak tree to mark the start of this exciting project.
Staff from Liberty Steel painted several wendy houses, installed a four-metre gazebo pole and the tyres to make pathways. They made several wooden storage boxes and transferred a large number of cable bobbins that will be used as seats and tables. They were hard at work and happy to help the school and the children.
The school plan to re-wild the area around the forest and create a dry and wet meadow to increase the biodiversity of their school field, which is currently an unused green space. This event was only just the start of the project.
A big thanks to everyone that was involved in the event, and apologies if there is anyone that we haven't mentioned.
A selection of photos taken on the day are included below.

Students help with conservation at Keppel's Field
Harry is one of the Council's Rangers and has been working with a number of students from the Rotherham Opportunities College (ROC), as part of conservation efforts at Keppel's Field. Harry shares more below.
Both the students and the tutors have shown fantastic enthusiasm in helping with the conservation of Keppel’s Field.
We focussed on removing dogwood, hawthorn, oak, and bramble scrub in the grazing area of the field.
The students managed to help clear a massive section in just 2 workdays.
I’m looking forward to working with the students more, as well as other groups from the ROC. There are still lots of scrubs to removed in the grazing area, as well as some rejuvenation works planned for the heathland area.
Two new litter bins have been installed in the Keppel Ward.
Extra bins were requested by your local councillors with support from the S61 Litter Pickers. A survey was then undertaken and extra patrols were carried out to identify where extra bin capacity is needed.
This has led to the addition of 1 new bin at St John’s Green and 1 new bin at Ring O Bells. Hopefully, the new bins will ease litter issues in these locations.
