Combatting condensation and mould in your home

Mould and condensation drawing, man at window

Condensation happens where warm, moist air comes into contact with a cold surface and can happen anywhere in the home.

Whilst condensation itself is harmless, it can lead to mould growth which is unsightly and may affect your heath.

Although mould can be a worry, a few simple changes around the home can cut down on the amount of condensation and help stop the spread of mould –

Reduce moisture: Covering pans when cooking and drying clothes in the bathroom with an open window all help cut down the amount of moisture produced. Increase ventilation:  It is important to let as much fresh air into your home as you can. Try to keep a small window ajar, especially after a bath or shower and close the kitchen door when cooking, even just for half an hour. If you have an extractor fan ensure that it is switched on and functioning correctly.

Heat your home: We know this is not easy with rising energy prices but heating your home at even a low level will help.

Regular cleaning: If you do find mould spots, regular cleaning with a fungicidal cleaner is vital to ensure it does not become unmanageable. For more information preventing and combatting condensation and mould in your home visit - www.rotherham.gov.uk/private-housing/information-tenants/5

If you are a Council tenant and think you have damp or mould call the contact centre on 01709 336009 to book an appointment with a technical officer.
