School pupils and residents were invited to take part in glass blowing workshops at Catcliffe Glass Cone on Tuesday 4 October 2022, marking the first-time glass had been made at the kiln for around 125 years.
This event was organised by the Catcliffe Cone Community Group and was their final event of the year.
Pupils and teachers from five local schools attended, including Treeton Church of England Primary School, Waverley Junior Academy, Catcliffe Primary, Brinsworth Howarth Primary and Brinsworth Academy.
The pupils and teachers experienced a 30-minute glass object handling and talk. This was provided by the Museum Engagement Team, this included some of the tools that were used in glass making at Beatson Clark.
Jonathan and Kurt of Lumsdale Glass, Matlock, demonstrated how they make hand blown glass objects and the audience was spellbound.
Across the year, various events have been held inside and outside the Catcliffe Glass Cone by the Catcliffe Cone Community Group.
These events have been supported by Rotherham Council.
The local community has engaged with all of the events that have taken place, and there have been visitors to the area from far and wide.
Susan Kahler, Catcliffe Cone Community Group Secretary, said:
"It has been almost 125 years since the last glass was produced in the Cone, so we were thrilled to celebrate by holding a traditional glass blowing demonstration.
"In less than a year the group has certainly raised the profile of the Cone. We would like to say a big thank you to our supporters because without them we would not be able to hold our events. These include Rotherham Council, Ward Councillors, Balfour Beatty, Beatson Clark, Catcliffe Garage and the Lottery Community Fund."
The group are now busy planning their next events and activities. Further information will be shared very soon.

-
Priority 1: Support and contribute to a clean and green environment
-
Priority 2: Support and develop community safety
-
Priority 3: Support health, economic and social issues
-
Priority 4: Support initiatives and events that encourage community cohesion and develop an understanding of diverse communities
