New British Sign Language (BSL) displays have been installed in the Bramley and Ravenfield Ward at Flash Lane and Hollings Lane parks.
Last year Councillor Mills had the idea to install BSL displays in parks across the ward to promote inclusivity and to encourage children and young people to learn and communicate with each other, play together and to make friendships.
The displays show you how to sign the alphabet, as well as some key words that will come in useful in a play area, such as ‘play’, ‘friend’, ‘love’ and ‘help’.
We would like to thank both Bramley Parish Council and Ravenfield Parish Council for their support with the initiative.
Ward Councillors provided funding for the project through their Capital budget.
The project supports ward priorities for the Bramley and Ravenfield Ward by improving the environment and enhancing community facilities in the area, as well as bringing people together to improve mental and physical wellbeing.
Ward Councillors are delighted to have been involved with this initiative, which is the first of its kind for Rotherham.
Councillor Lewis Mills, Ward Councillor for Bramley and Ravenfield Ward, commented: "I hope these signs help children understand the importance of communication and friendship."
Councillor Greg Reynolds, Ward Councillor for Bramley and Ravenfield Ward, added: "This is fantastic and is a brilliant piece of equipment to have in our local parks."
We hope that the new equipment brings joy to children, their friends and families and that it encourages everyone to learn and play together.

It's a 'line' and 'full house' at The Lings!
The Bingo Group at The Lings Neighbourhood Centre, Bramley have been celebrating a 'line' and 'full house', after receiving a funding boost from Bramley and Ravenfield Ward Councillors.
Councillors agreed to fund bingo resources through their Community Leadership Fund, after meeting the group at the centre and listening to their ideas, as well as some of the things they wanted and needed.
The group regularly fundraise to purchase their own tickets, refreshments and raffle prizes, as well as saving hard to fund day trips out to local garden and shopping centres.
Councillors Reynolds and Mills thought the group deserved a trip to soak up the sun, breathe in the sea air and sample seaside fish & chips, so funded the coach fare to sunny Bridlington earlier this month!
Elsie, one of the group members, commented: "It was fabulous. We sat overlooking the harbour, watching the world go by with the sun on our faces. It was breezy, but lovely and warm."

A message from South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue
We know bonfires and fireworks are popular, especially on Bonfire Night and around the New Year, but it’s important to be safe.
Every year we attend countless incidents involving bonfires that have got out of control, or fireworks that have gone astray. In more serious cases, people have found themselves seriously hurt.
Our main advice around these times of year, especially Bonfire Night, is to attend organised displays. These are safer and far more spectacular!
However, if you are having a bonfire at home, or are setting off fireworks, please follow our simple advice to keep yourself and others safe.
Bonfire safety
- Any bonfire should be sited well away from houses, trees, sheds, fences and other outbuildings
- You should never use paraffin, petrol or any other fuel or accelerant on a bonfire
- Ensure you have a supply of water nearby to dampen the flames if necessary
- Do not burn things like plastic or chemicals – these can produce thick and acrid smoke
Firework safety
- Only buy fireworks from reputable suppliers and ensure they meet safety standards
- Take care when lighting fireworks – keep at arms-length away and don’t go back to them once lit
- Never throw fireworks, don’t put them in your pocket and ensure they are not pointing towards people, buildings or trees
- Best practice is to keep fireworks in the box and get them out one at a time
- Be a good neighbour – consider those with pets and remember there are rules around how late you are able to set fireworks off

It’s important that children learn to talk and listen, so they can communicate, make friends, have fun and learn about the world. Helping children to learn these skills can be as easy as talking, listening and playing with them whenever and wherever you can, but sometimes it can be hard to know where to start.
Tiny Talkers Rotherham supports local parents, carers and professionals to boost children’s vital speech, language and communications skills by providing lots of ideas and activities such as -
- Singing along with your child to everyday activities - “Wash, wash, wash your hands….”
- Talking about what you’ve found on a mini adventure – ask them to describe the leaves on the floor, or the sounds they can hear.
- Playing memory games and taking turns to remember things - “what did we buy from the shop today”?
Not sure where to start?
