Summer of family fun
Alison Ward (Flux Rotherham) and Claire Moseley (Neighbourhood Coordinator) organised 7 free, family activity afternoons throughout Hellaby and Maltby over the summer.
The events were organised to provide something for residents to enjoy within a walking distance from their homes.
We listened to requests from residents for affordable local events with no transport cost.
Hellaby and Maltby West Ward Councillors, (Cllr Andrews and Cllr Ball) and Maltby East Ward Councillors (Cllr Tinsley and Cllr Hunter), supported these events by providing refreshments and helping on many of the activity days.
To kick the sessions off, Hellaby and Maltby West Councillors funded a bouncy castle, children had 3 hours of free bouncing fun and a few older residents couldn’t resist a few go's either!
These events also support ward priorities in the area, including the Maltby East Ward priority of 'Improving opportunities and facilities for children and young people'.
Ward Councillors are committed to supporting local activities for families. Councillors are also committed to helping connect children and young people to initiatives, which aim to improve their wellbeing and job opportunities.
Organisations based in Maltby (including Maltby Leisure Centre, Yorkshire Sports and the Neighbourhood Police Team) were invited to support the events.
They provided things like tennis equipment, a pedal to make a fruit smoothie and Police vehicles to explore. Tesco Community Champion, Julia Jones, also joined us on some events, giving out healthy fruit and snacks.
The sessions promoted simple family play with an invite to join us earlier for a picnic. Each session offered a themed art and craft activity, sports and traditional garden games.
|
To end the programme of activities, we organised a natural play and forest school type activity day, held at locally known green space, 'Teletubbies Field', off Huntington Way, West Maltby. Families enjoyed making Boggart homes, scary Boggart head magic sticks and giant natural art, all to scare the dragons away.
In total, over 400 residents from toddlers to grandparents, enjoyed the events alongside staff and volunteers that made it happen.

Some lucky Maltby residents enjoyed working with the Circus this August and September.
Let's Circus were back at the Rotherham Show, I hope some of you managed to catch their amazing show and enjoy all that the Rotherham Show had to offer.
The Circus came to town in August to join forces with Rotherham Council to deliver free participation sessions for the over 55's as a safe, fun, creative and sociable activity.
No experience was required, just a desire to get involved and try something different!
Each Wednesday there were 2 sessions at Rotherham Civic Theatre and Arts Centre and some lucky Maltby residents also got a special visit to their community groups. Lets B:friend was one of these groups, who meet in Maltby Library every Tuesday morning. Bevan Crescent Community Group also had the Circus visit, this group meets every Tuesday and Thursday morning at Bevan Crescent Neighbourhood Room.
The photos below show some of these groups and Neighbourhood Coordinator Claire, enjoying their final session at Rotherham Civic Theatre Annex.

Rotherham Council pledged an investment in smaller villages and towns in the borough that are not being supported through National Government Funding Schemes (such as the Levelling Up Fund that Maltby East Ward was successful in, which will see the redevelopment of the former Grammar School to support in their 6th Form education project).
Hellaby and Maltby East Ward Councillors, Cllr Ball and Cllr Andrews, submitted several projects after consultation with residents and earlier this year it was announced that the Laburnum Parade Project was accepted and would be one of the first towns and villages schemes to be implemented in Rotherham.
Laburnum Parade is host to a variety of well-used shops including takeaways, a large Spar supermarket and a pharmacy. An issue with the area is that there is very limited parking for shoppers. This means that vehicles are often double parked on the narrow side streets and taking residential parking spaces.
The Towns and Villages Scheme will create marked off-street parking at the Laburnum Parade shops. In addition, the existing green space will be improved.
Currently, work to set out and surface the two car parking areas is nearly complete, as is the realigned footway. Work on the central paved plaza area will commence shortly.
The pictures below show the progress from week one in early August to mid-September. It is hoped that the works will be complete by the end of October.

Maltby is lucky to have some beautiful countryside at its border. One such area is Maltby Craggs with its diverse wildlife, trees, wildflowers and grasses with the added historical importance of Roche Abbey and geological important crags, making it a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
Much of the land is owned by Lord Scarborough within the Sandbeck Estate, however, there are small areas such as the Low Commons Nature Reserve that is owned and managed by Yorkshire Wildlife Trust.
To help manage and protect this important piece of Countryside, a management committee was established to bring together a selection of experts in ecology, land management and those who wish to protect and improve their local countryside. Members include Lord Scarborough, Yorkshire Wildlife Trust Officer, Maltby Town Council, local ecologists and local countryside management experts including Jim Staveley (Greener Spaces Ltd) and Martin Fisher (RAM Countryside Services).
Neighbourhood Coordinator, Claire Moseley, from Maltby and Hellaby Wards, previously a Countryside Ranger for over 20 years, was invited to one of the committee's walkabout and planning meetings. The group discussed the protection of the Lower Common biodiversity, grass cutting and removal of brash to promote wildflowers and man-made issues that threaten the wildlife such as quad bikers, burnt out cars and litter.
It's harvest time at the moment. At this time of the year, there is an increased risk of poaching.
If you see quad bikes in fields at night and its not your local farmer, then please call South Yorkshire Police. Now the crops are being cleared unfortunately it prompts poachers to come out to kill wildlife.
Not many people will be in farm fields at 2am on quad bikes with dogs. All we ask is for you is to let us know. There may be wildlife crime in progress and you will get a prompt response from ourselves to check it out.
If you run a storage yard or live or work near one and have farm quads coming and going from the containers and suspect they are taking part in late night poaching, please do let us know.
If anyone passes through your village and you think they are up to no good, make a note of the time and if you have CCTV then send it though. The destruction they cause to the farmers fields, hedgerows and fences, and the untold effect it has on our wildlife will not be tolerated in our county.
