Forge Island's industrial history uncovered

dig

An archaeological dig at Forge Island has given a fascinating insight into Rotherham’s industrial past.

Forge Island, which is currently being developed into a vibrant new leisure destination, has an interesting history and was once home to forges, mills, timber yards, a pub and even terraced houses.

The findings included furnaces, tools, pottery, glass and the well-preserved remains of a water-wheel pit!

The Council and development partners Muse are regenerating the site and excitement is building ahead of the anticipated start on site this autumn. Forge Island will be transformed into a family destination with boutique cinema operator, The Arc, and Travelodge already signed up, alongside a range of family orientated restaurants and bars.
