Warning to crows in Firbeck
Take a trip out to Firbeck on Saturday 27th August to see their amazing scarecrows. The event runs from 10am to 5pm.
The theme of the scarecrow event this year is 'occupations' so expect to see anything from a Scarecrow Traffic Warden, Vicar or even the Queen!
Before you set off to see the scarecrows, you can pick up a trail map for just £1, which can be entered into a prize draw.
Whilst on route keep a look out for our Firbeck scarecrows Les and Dave as they walk on stilts (yes stilts!) from Laughton to Firbeck to support the Village Hall's fundraising work!
As well as a fantastic array of scarecrows, families can also take part in craft activities, outdoor games and enjoy storytime corner. Stalls selling bric-a-brac and plants will also be on offer, together with a fantastic raffle, for a chance to win a range of quality prizes. Then relax and enjoy a tasty sandwich, homemade cake and a drink at the Village Hall.

This summer, children aged 4-11 can visit Rotherham libraries to meet the Gadgeteers and to get involved in a science and innovation themed Summer Reading Challenge.
Through taking part in the Challenge, with free materials from our libraries and online via the Challenge website, children will be able to join six fictional Gadgeteers. The characters – brought to life by children’s writer and illustrator Julian Beresford – use their curiosity and wonder to understand the science behind a whole range of interests, from fashion and technology to cooking and music.
Through an exciting book collection and accompanying activities, the Gadgeteers will help to spark children’s curiosity about the world around them, and encourage them to feed their imagination over the summer holiday. They will be boggled by brilliant facts, gaze at the stars, and be inspired by tales of creativity and invention. With plenty of great options across picture books, early readers and middle grade books, there’s lots to keep children busy.
- To find out more about the planned activities, please contact your local library. We’ve got 15 libraries across Rotherham, including Dinnington!
As the UK has experienced some of the hottest temperatures on record, we wanted to highlight the dangers of open water.
Strong hidden currents, debris under the water and cold temperatures can hinder your swimming abilities - posing a serious risk to life.
- Do not enter or swim in open water, even if it looks calm. We are encouraging people to share the dangers with family and friends. You can find more information at the following link about staying safe.
The Council’s Energy Crisis Support Scheme provides a payment of up to £250 to households struggling to meet the costs of their energy bills as a result of the significant rise in energy costs.
In order to qualify for the Energy Crisis Support Scheme, applicants will be asked to provide information about their current financial situation, along with a recent bank statement and estimated monthly expenditure and income.
Applicants must have no more than £150 a month left over after paying for all their essential costs such as food / rent / utility bills. If you have more than £150 left over each month, then you may not meet the criteria at this time.
Support for pensioners with household living costs
In addition, pensioners in need of support with energy costs, may also be able to access an additional £150 to support them with the wider increases in the cost of living. Only one application is required, and the Council will assess applicants for support from both schemes.

Cost of living payments are being issued by the Government. There has been a significant increase in scammers attempting to obtain personal information from customers. This includes sending out text messages suggesting that customers are eligible for cost of living payments.
If you are eligible for cost of living payments you do not have to do anything. If you are eligible:
- You do not need to apply for the payment
- You do not need to call the Department for Work and Pensions
- The payment is automatic
- The Department for Work and Pensions will never ask for personal details, either by SMS or email
The Neighbourhoods Team were lucky enough to meet members of the Dinnington Colliery Band this month and chat to them about the fantastic opportunities they offer, as well as providing beautiful music in the open air.
As mining is such a rich part of Dinnington's history, I was amazed that the band are the only local group to retain the Colliery name.
Joanne from the group explained that the training band offer free tuition to members of any age, with instruments provided for free hire, this includes lightweight plastic trombones for the younger musicians.
Joanne has taught people who joined in their 80s so you're never too old to learn. The group would love to welcome new members so why not come along on a Saturday morning to discover your talent!

Mental health support for young people available
Not having regular contact with school staff through the summer holidays can leave some young people wondering who to talk to if they are struggling.
The NHS has an eClinic app, a free instant messaging service which enables young people (11-18 years) in the Dinnington area to self-refer and talk to a Practitioner via their mobile device. Young people can download the app via android or IOS, register their details and book an appointment via the app.
The appointment is held via a text message-based service. A Parent Plus e-clinic is also available for parents, carers and professionals wanting advice.
